It's interesting that the Chabad Movement seems to place little value on an aesthetic environment. If this video is truly representative of the Crown Heights community, there are few, if any, decorative elements in interiors or exteriors. This extends to personal appearance, without concern for the dictates of fashion clothing.
@hjyigo4759

What I think is interesting about American Jewry v British Jewry is that whilst there are large amounts of Chasidim in the US, establishment Jewry isn't Orthodox, but more liberal. But in the UK, the mainstream is Orthodox and it is now common for Chabad rabbis to lead mainstream large London shuls, like Yitzchak Schochet or Herschel Radar.
@boliussa
3 жыл бұрын
+Hi Yigo Another related thing there is you have a religiously left wing modern orthodox like the United Synagogue chain of Shuls, where the practise might range from conservative to orthodox but the professed belief is Orthodox.. By having a welcoming nominally orthodox option, it means that Jews that might otherwise consider a conservative synagugoe, stay in an orthodox shul. And while somewhat minimal possibily, keep to the religion of their ancestors. Really more conservative than the so-called conservative movement.

Wonderful to see 770 in the late 80's, but the underlying narrative is deeply disingenuous and tries from the outset to portray Chabad Lubavitch and the hasidic way-of-life in an unfair, negative light. I don't mind secular people, atheists, non-Jews, anyone! But I think a 'documentary' has a duty to try see beyond its own social, cultural, and spiritual presuppositions.

This documentary is extremely superficial and neglects the deeply spiritual but rooted in the world aspects of Chasidism and also the historical roots of the movement which was revolutionary to Judaism. Chabad uniquely of other Orthodox movements is accepting of the world, of others, outward-looking and modern as well as traditional and biblical. It is truly a model for the world in living a godly life. Along with the Amish I admire it very greatly as a social system and lifestyle; simlicity and godliness, compassion and kindness. We need the old Judaeo-Christian models that grounded Western civilisation more than ever in this modern life, with all its unhappiness and turmoils.

As for Jewish dress and what they must eat n the daily life mentioned in the documentary....that’s the life of many or most Orthodox Jews. Hair covering the head, wigs are iffy to many though, they must eat kosher, they don’t marry non Jews or date, wearing tefillin, the mikvoh etc. chabad is no different

Kapparoth is something I don't like .... poor chickens .... sorry. I have had the misfortune to watch documentaries that portray the principles of Judaism as being a bit crazed and beyond. The media seem to focus on the Chabad Hassidic Haredi congregation as if nuts and weird in a negative way. If the media would do their research they might realize that certain rituals and customs are beneficial. I would say that the swinging of incense and a confession box is alien to my thought and in reply, the Dissolution of the Monasteries was very negative and disruptive. I guess there are lots of ways of embracing G-d. Unfortunately, some documentaries I have watched have always as I see them hovered towards the negative.
