When Viv called her lawyer regarding collecting past due alimony from her ex Ralph, I'd think that she would have been also awarded child support for Sherman - wonder if he paid that up to date? Usually divorced women would be more likely to be awarded child support and only temporarily awarded alimony - especially these days. Back then it was accepted/expected for divorced women to stay home with their children (at least in the US) but now they are expected to go to work. I don't know about back then but courts now have the authority to garnish things as wages and tax refunds from deadbeat dads - oftentimes, this is generated when the mom needs to file for public assistance due to the failure to receive back alimony and/or child support.

The Lucy character was so hard up am sure that the house was heavily mortgaged. If that was true then the banker Mr. Barnsdahl should have insisted that an escrow account be set up (to pay for homeowners' insurance and property taxes) when Lucy said "pooh!" about renewing the coverage. Then if Viv asserted a claim for medical expenses and pain & suffering from her injury slipping on Jerry's toy car that was in Lucy's kitchen, a claim could be filed against that insurance - of course then, the carrier is liable to raise the premiums seeing that she's a worse risk then anticipated, but Lucy could then raise Viv's rent.... Like someone else suggested, Lucy could waive Viv's back rent to offset Viv's medical expenses but only IF Viv signed a waiver holding Lucy and the bank harmless from any future expenses from the injury - it should be signed in front of a notary or other neutral party. After awhile she could make up the lost income in part by raising Viv's rent. Also, I would have withheld Jerry's allowance for a couple weeks - even though it wouldn't come near paying for Viv's medical expenses - but to teach him a lesson; likewise, for whoever's skate it was that Viv tripped over at the end.

Sad but true - even relatives do this - just watch any of the court shows where people go to have their small claims cases arbitrated. Now people in the early 20th century were way less litigious - in the early 60's people became more litigious but not nearly as so as they are now. Lucy didn't have a lawyer, that was Mr.Barnstall and he is actually Lucy's banker, he is the executor of her trust fund for the first season of this show, Viv was the one with a lawyer, he was never shown and she only has a lawyer because of her divorce, she was just trying to get her back alimony from her ex husband Ralph and she was just playing a joke on Lucy because Lucy thought she would ever sue her. However you are correct that the man who plays Mr.Barnstall did appear as Ricky's new business manager in the first episode of the fourth season of I Love Lucy entitled The Business Manager. He also played in the episodes Lucy Tells The Truth and Staten Island Ferry. Fun Fact: Vivian Vance was the first ever women to play in a television show as a divorcee with her betrayal as Vivian Bagley in this show. I love Lucy very much and she's a star and she shines very bright, but I don't believe it is fair to Vivian Vance that she always be called Ethel, her betrayal as Ethel Mertz was perfection, however she also shines in other roles and just in general, she played this role very well, the reason she used her real first name in this show is because she was tired of everyone she saw or talked to or met calling her Ethel, she wanted people to stop calling her that, so she insisted on using her real first name in this show. She was more than just a character in a show and I believe she deserves our respect. She was an incredibly talented woman and a true star who worked very hard and made so many people smile and laugh and admire her, she was a real class act who spend her screen time playing behind Lucy and never getting the true recognition she deserved. She is and will always be a true Icon of The Golden Age Of Hollywood along with Lucille Ball The Comedy Queen.

Agree in principle with some caveats - unless Lucy happened to have video cameras around when Viv went to call her attorney, it would be Lucy's word against Viv's (of course if Chris or Jerry were around they could be witnesses but their credibility would be in question since they are Lucy's children - the converse would be if Sherman was around since he's Viv's son). Also, it could possibly backfire if Viv got injured again whilst going to the phone.
