Christopher McCandless was on a journey of self discovery, he didn't want material things and I find it interesting that so many people find his story so captivating to this day. Unless you're in there pissing on things, or trying to destroy it, I'd think Christopher would welcome people visiting this bus in the spirit of freedom and adventure, I don't think he'd find it disrespectful, quite the contrary. Just my honest opinion. And let's look at the facts here, this was 2009 and there still appeared to be items on that bus that may very well have belonged to Christopher McCandless, I find it amazing that there hasn't been some group of vandals out there that have completely torn it apart. It would be in much worse shape if the people hiking hours and hours to visit it were there to vandalize it, or disrespect it.

The most charitable view among McCandless's detractors is that his behavior showed a profound lack of common sense. He chose not to bring a compass (which most people in the same situation would have considered essential). McCandless was completely unaware that a hand-operated tram crossed the otherwise impassable river ¼ mile from where he attempted to cross. Had McCandless known this, he could easily have saved his own life. Additionally, there were cabins stocked with emergency supplies.
