I think it's sounds better in German but this is an opera with a really good storyline that is meant to be understood while watching so it would make no sense for an English audience to listen to it in German. Well, unless they want to do subtitles (or upper titles) with the translation of the lyrics like they sometimes do for operas nowadays.

I have no problem with English, but opera is music, not lyrics. The words are mostly to literature what limerick are to music. I don’t even like subtitles. If the music can’t tell me all I need to know, the words won’t bail it out.
@urmorph
6 жыл бұрын
If you heard it on radio, and didn't speak the language, you wouldn't even know the plot. Opera is drama. Dramas have plots. The music at any given moment should be in accord with the dramatic action. (The stage direction, too.) Opera producers could save a ton of money if all they needed was music. And you wouldn't have to pay librettists either. The singers could just shout "La la la la..." for four and a half hours. (Also it should be noted that not all libretti are masterpieces, including this one. As Beaumarchais wrote, "What is too silly to be said can be sung.")
@phangirlable
5 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean but this opera, actually all Baroque and Rococo opera does have the emotions AND the great storyline. It's absolutely worth it being able to understand what's going on and what they are actually saying and singing. This is not like classical Italian opera where not much is said within a 10 minute aria.
