Brian Magerko is a cognitive scientist and champion of integrating the arts and computer science. In this talk he shows how music can be used teach computer programming among girls and teens of color when the barrier of having to learn music theory is removed.
Brian Magerko is an associate professor of digital media and head of the Adaptive Digital Media (ADAM) Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research exploring the intersection of creativity, cognition and computing, has resulted in cutting-edge experiences in digital games, installation art, interactive narrative and educational media.
EarSketch, a music-based learning environment for computer science, was developed with Jason Freeman and is being used by tens of thousands of learners worldwide.
Magerko has led over $5 million of federally-funded research and authored more than 60 articles related to cognition, creativity, and computation.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
