I have amassed a few of those seafoam green 236s. They shine crazy bright, thats for sure. I can light one on one side of my yard, and see the tops of the trees on the other side.

That’s a beautiful 236 I just bought mine exactly same but more beat up on the ventilator, but as you say, it has its own character and I don’t think I’ll ever let it go haha Thanks for sharing your collection!!

Man, I love all those lanterns - my 236 (1955) and 220E (1958) are my favorites.... but I got to tell you I wouldn't be taking any of those beauties camping - I'd be too afraid something would happen to them!

I have a pretty good collection of Coleman gear and I use just about all of it. I love firing up one of these old beautiful lanterns to light up the campsite and cooking dinner on a old No. 2 stove. They don't do no good sitting on a shelf being pretty, I put them to work. :)

I like your attitude. It's a good philosophy. Mine are all 'users' too - I would just be reluctant to take my two or three favourites and oldest out camping.

just out of curiosity, have you ever had one catch fire in a bad way or does there design prevent that from being possible

There's always a chance that one will flame up, that's why it's always a good idea to be outside when ya first light one up. With the 100s of lanterns that I've worked on I've never had one get out of control. Always look for leaks before ya light it. Sometimes you can have a bad generator that will let to much liquid through and it will flame up. If that happens just shut off the valve and let itself burn out. You can also have a leak around the base of the generator or around the valve stem where it enters the body, which you can easily blow out. Usually just snug up the nuts and that will take care of the leak. For the most part they are very safe but always use caution.

Which mantel do you use in yours? I am going to try your lighting technique. I have always done it the instructions way.

Hello from Chile, I bought a Canadian 242B. I see those 2 screws from the pump plunger section are rusted. It is very difficult for me to remove them. Any tip how to remove them, they are tiny. I just want to make it bright again. I hope you can give me a hand with your opinion.

I was just gifted a green Coleman 236. How do I take the top off to clean the glass globe etc? It is quite dirty and rusty in spots, the handle being the main rust area. I have gently wiped n washed the exterior, just can’t get inside the globe. Thanks.

The top vent nut should release (it may need oiling first and penetrating time, especially if the nut and thread is corroded) and the bail can carefully be pulled out from the pivot points beneath the vent. Then the vent can be lifted off followed by the globe. 236/237 are a wonderful series of lanterns developed by Toronto Coleman in the late 1930s and made up to 1970, when they were replaced by the 635/639 series.
