1. Simplicity-that was one of the conditions Red Army imposed on all guns for the army. In this sense, PM is a 100% of this goal achieved: 28 parts. 2. If you truly love makarovs, show how they can be easily disassembled completely with only a cleaning rod. This is taught in Russian police schools. 3. PM was indeed the first gun in space, since Gagarin in 1961 had it hidden somewhere among the rest of the luggage, with the only exception: they put this gun not to fight aliens, but to fight wild animals after landing. How would it be practical-perhaps not much, at least shooting could be heard from some distance. 4. When Soviet army adopted ПМ as a standard sidearm, Makarov himself was testing something on the range. When the news reached him, he found the biggest paddle on the shooting range, and jumped into it-that’s how happy he was. 5. Heavy trigger is another safety, just in case. 6. Makarov wasn’t only a firearm designer. His wife came to him one day, and said “Kolya, I want to pickle some cucumbers, but the lid doesn’t seal well. Can you do something to it?” Makarov designed a tool that goes over the metal lid of the jar and equally bends the edges, sealing it.

What I find fascinating about the Makarov aside from what was mentioned is that the Mak only has 27 parts, which is even fewer than a Glock. A lot of its internal parts serves dual purpose such as: Mainspring is magazine release spring, safety/decocker also retains the firing pin, slide stop is also the ejector, sear spring is also slide stop spring.

Love the Makarov! I bought one in the early 90's, a Baikal, later sold it against my better judgement. Bought a second one in the late 90's. Both were Russian models with the adjustable rear sights and both in .380 acp with single stack mags. Replaced the stock grip with a Pearce grip. Accuracy is unbelievable. Always felt safe when carrying these because of their reliability and accuracy. Shot the standard PPC and Q qualification courses with it and never had a problem qualifying. Yes, the .380 round is not as good or powerful, but accurate shot placement can make up for this. The simplicity of this firearm is the real star. The "KISS" principle is embodied by the Makarov. Great video!

Like most com bloc guns, it will give itself a trigger job with use. I discovered a couple cool things from long dead websites back when I owned my Makarov. If your trigger pull is gritty, shooting it will help but you can get some valve grinding paste (which is really just fine lapping compound) and smear some on the sear engagement surfaces. Wherever trigger parts rub, smear a little on and go shooting or dry fire (use a snap cap with a Makarov) to work the parts together. When you're done, clean the gun and get the lapping compound off. You can apply some anti-seize compound to the parts you lapped to get long term lubrication between the metal surfaces (cheap copper grade is fine) or you can have another go with more lapping compound if you like. Point is you can clean up the trigger quite a bit for about $10 at your local auto part store. You may need to sell a kidney for ammo though. I don't see any reason why the Makarov is a bad choice other than the weight. Sure they are chonks compared to a Glock 26, but I'm a big boy and I can conceal it just fine. Buy a good belt. 9x18 is more than adequate for most scenarios a civilian would find themselves in. If you're undergunned with a Makarov, you should have brought your rifle.

Love this gun I bought a Makarov when I was 21. It was my first firearm. Loved it . Also bought a Tokarov as well. Loved that one so much I bought 2. And the last piece of my loves was my 38 special Burgo. With This thing I could shoot clay pigeons after they were launched. And the Tokorav split a bowling ball. And the piece that blew of you could see the waves in the material and you could put the broken piece right back on it snugly. Crazy.

Fun Fact: Putin hated this pistol, saying that the cartridge had less penetration and power than a 7.62x25, that the gun felt less natural in his hand than a tokarev, and that it was hard to get out of the pocket. :D

I would agree. It's a pee-shooter. The Makarov, Walther PPK...... anything that looks like something a woman would fumble around in her purse for to try to stop a date-rape..... Ew. Now, if I was to own a Russian semi-auto pistol, I'd want a Gsh-18. That thing is sweet, and it can shoot high-pressure rounds, like the special armor piercing 9x19 them Russians offer!

Im not really a pistol guy, but my friend is a gun collector and we put around 1500 rounds down range one day , with about 18 different pistols. And with my almost zero knowledge of pistols i enjoyed shooting the makarov the most, and for me i was the most accurate with it. And that was comparing it to pistols that literally cost 10+ times more money. So this was interesting to watch, thanks.

Dude I've been watching your channel for a while and I really liked your content, also I've been looking forward for an old school Makarov video. When you said that your Makarov is from Bulgaria I wasn't surprised at all! Bulgaria is the second biggest manufacturer of Russian firearms in the world, in fact your pistol most likely was manufactured in the military factory Arsenal which is located in the city of Kazanlak in Bulgaria. The exciting part for me is that Kazanlak is my home town. I was really thrilled to even hear you saying Bulgaria, due to the fact our country is pretty small. Anyways thank you for mentioning my country haha it was really cool video bro.

I'm glad you're liking my country's Mak Brandon! I'm looking into buying one myself in the future too. A somewhat sad story involving a Mak that my dad told me from the times he was a conscript is an officer ordered a conscript to clean his service pistol (a makarov) and while cleaning it the soldier had a ND and hit the person infront of him straight in the dome which happened to be his best friend for 15 years. He ended up being traumatized for life and jailed for murder due to negligence.

Brandon, I stumbled across this and have to say, it’s 100% on point. I’ve had my 380 makarov since the 1990’s. Not a “boomer”, just a gen X. Took my mak, out of about 10 other choices, to qualify for my concealed permit. Out shot my buddy, we compete in idpa comps. He had an m&p 9 custom shop. I scored perfect, he missed 1 point. I’ve run thousands of rounds through it and I’ve never had an FTF or FTE with it. If I didn’t carry my .45, because they don’t make a .46, the mak would be my every day carry with the black talons I have for it. Great review!
