Okay. Just to all that just MIGHT be interested.......I worked a Disneyland from '70 to '81 as the audio tech. I helped make and mix/blend the zone boxes to each individual float. I do admit the former isn't like the latter but it was a blast making and being a part of it back in the day. And when the 1976 bicentennial parade got in the works, I was there for that also

I saw the computer used to drive the "zone" system mentioned at 22:15 into the video. Surprisingly, it was a CP/M system, only 64 kilo-bytes of memory using 8 1/2 inch floppy disks, and the software was written in Basic. There were a pair of 24 track tape players, and I think Electrical Parade used 18 tracks, with a room full of switches to connect any of the 18 tracks with any of the 22 zones as the parade progressed through its route . To track the parade, there were sensors along the route that were triggered by the lead float. One of the sensors was out, so the zone program was coded to put a fixed delay after the prior sensor was triggered to simulate a trigger for the sensor that was out. The guys in the room noted that the lead car driver managed to match the delay usually within a couple of seconds.

It was a Berkey Colortran system actually designed for automated lighting control. It was replaced with a new customized system running on OS/2 in the late 80s. That system has already been replaced with something newer.

It's amazing how much work (and money) must go into making this happen. Since I am into audio music production, I find it interesting that they used a Synclavier to record the music. My understanding is that it was a digital sampling keyboard that cost $250,000 back in the late 70s or early 80s. By the mid-80s, you could do the same thing with an Emu Systems EMAX for $3-4000. Now, it's all done with "software synths" and computer memory and hard disk space is so cheap that you get more bang for the buck on what the electronics can do to produce the music.
@disneydanny2

@116392329910277422468 yeah back when they made the soundtrack, it was a painstaking process because for some of those instruments you had to play the music one note at a time and layering it until you got chords.

I would watch the sh** out of Disney Channel if it had documentaries about all of the Disney Parks and movies. And it really sucks that the Dumbo Floats, the Blue Fairy, and the other Pinocchio float had to be retired. Hopefully they could come back eventually.
