I taught high school, about 90% black students; emotionally disturbed and many gang bangers. I bought this tremendous film on laser disc and showed it to them. Unsurprisingly, they loved it 100%. I remember them singing that "Oh my lord" song spontaneously.... not a whole lot of positive role model films for black kids back then. This is a film a person can watch over and over and over again.

My first job after graduating from USF in 1971 was to become one of the first white teachers at Orlando's Jones High School, an all African American school that opened its doors in 1895. My time there was before this film came out, so I had to dig deep to find inspiring historical subjects. One subject that I was passionate about was aviation, so the Tuskigee Airman was what I selected to teach them about. So, as a young private pilot, at the end of the course, and with their parents' permission, I rented a Cessna 172 and gave them rides. Two of my students would later graduate from college and join the US Air Force and became C-130 pilots. They are retired now. I am still in touch with so many of my old students from 50+ years ago, and I never miss a reunion. They will always be my "kids"

I originally saw this on video after it left the movies. Realized how disappointing it was to not see it on the big screen. I bought the DVD and have swoon it to many of my family and friends. My wife and I attended the 30th anniversary showing of it in the movies. So glad to experience it in that manner. This is an outstanding piece of cinema on multiple levels. Best film ever about the Civil 'War. Will always remember André Braugher's character. Reminded me of my immaturity when I first entered the Military Academy at West Point and my need to grow up.

I spent a weekend in April, 1989 at a location about an hour’s drive south of Atlanta to film the Antietam battle scenes. I brought about 30+ guys who were “real” Yankees from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio down. ( The other reenactors on both sides were nearly all southerners. Several of the guys brought their wives, daughter and girlfriends along. I wondered why as I had been an extra in North And South Book II and movie work was long days with nothing for families to do. They were hoping to see “movie stars” and they weren’t disappointed. Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes and other cast members were kind enough to pose for pictures with them and sign autographs.

Spent over 3 weeks on set. Learned movie making is long, tedious and wasteful. Denzel is a good man who spent time talking to us. But, Broderick is a sissy... Good story though.

I was a reenactor/historian/teacher at the time with a few INS to the historical advisors on set. Would love to have access to all the cut scenes! As it stands I'm visible alot during the Antietam scenes and in Savanah. It was an eye opener for sure. I figure millions are spent on cut scenes and footage amounting to a few seconds.
