You aren't wrong. age does play a roll just based on voting power and trends of values but it's not like labor is particularly different from the Tories when compared with real left wing values. @@SusanOnTVShows too late, they already do. And they aren't entirely wrong. Even taking out tools (eg knifes, hammers, bats, etc), there are plenty of physical differences that make it a decidedly unequal contest. Man vs old, young vs old, and then add in multiple opponents. Not saying that there isn't room for improvement when it comes to vetting purchases or required training, but since the dawn of time, bad people do bad things. And since the first monkey picked up a stick, the goal has always been to enable good people to thrive and bad people to self select darwinian extinction. Keep in mind, if criminals were afraid of laws and courts, crime would be non-existent.

My first thought as well, sitting here in a country where the #1 cause of death in people under 25 is guns, but violence is violence. Lost children are lost children. I think this holistic approach would work for many kind of violence, I hope to see more of it in the US as well so we can address the previously mentioned heinous statistic.

a lot of this seems to translate to zip codes of poor people are violent, send in the police. been loving the pod until this episode. the bottom rung of capitalist society gets police states instead of people working to tear down the false scarcity being imposed on people by the state. instead of sticks and band-aids, imagine general workers strikes changing where the seats of power are held. I think taking the head of every bmillionaire will have a funny effect of helping poor people fight each other less. but it seems the state will only allow sisyphean tasks and not fix things at the source

I might be missing something as an American, but I think I see a major challenge for the public impacting crime and rehabilitation as suggested. I think politicians and law enforcement can try to get feedback from the community and when they don’t find loud voices hear from either other local political forces or else those with the most time, resources, knowledge, or power. I think it’s legitimately difficult to get authentic representative feedback sometimes especially when so many incentives can be stacked against it. Maybe the structural challenges of politics are less or different in the UK (or England and Wales), but this felt like an elephant in the room.

One major problem getting public/government support is that, for decades, the consensus under neoliberalism is that the State should not be involved in anything beyond law enforcement. That ideology pervades the media, academia etc. Including being pushed by your sponsor, The Economist, t.b.h. Anyway, that needs to change. The guests here have a decent, holistic approach - although like many people from a working-class background, I have no faith in the police, at least in it's current form. We know the major flaws with the Met, for example. The cops are primarily there to enforce class power and protect private property, not protect the vast majority of us. Also, mental health services have been slashed, the NHS is in massive crisis. Who will provide this therapy and support in the context of Austerity and the systematic defunding of public services? Without wider, concrete social change any initiative like the ones discussed will just be tinkering at the edges or simply ignored by those in power who have no interest or motivation to deal with this issue.

I will say Gen-Z get a lot of flack but they are more politically minded than I was at their age and they actually understand the process of educating onesself. I have the bias of being a teacher but I do have more faith in the future gen than past gens. It wasnt that long ago that Boomers were calling millenials the same thing that many millenials call Zoomers. We have to break that mindset. They're our future regardless, may want to start giving them the respect they have been earning recently.
