Kipling captivated me as a kid, but as I got older and read some of his deeper works like "The Man Who Would Be King" I fell in love with his works as an adult. If anyone hasn't seen it, the movie was almost or more awesome than the book. Michael Cain played the story teller and Sean Connery was the King who lost his head. My younger self (I'm 71 now) wished there was some place left on earth that a man with the nerve, could carve himself out a kingdom ,Conan style, but those times are long past. Whatever you read by Kipling, always look deeper than his words, it helps to have a little knowledge about the history and time frames. One of the top 5 writers of all time.

Thanks for the recommendation, I remember seeing it online before but I overlooked it. I think Kipling and his stories have a quality to them not really shared amongst others in their niche. Maybe it’s because of the time period in which they were derived but growing up I always knew the stories but not the author. They are more fable than anything. With the work of even his contemporaries, I know they are just stories. Kiplings works are tales. If that makes sense. Feels like they’ve always been there and always will be.

I could welcome even the company of a fellow beggar right now although I'm really more of a hobo. I have never begged. I would rather die. But as things stand, it does appear that if I wish for a crown, then I must go seek for it myself.

The "gift" of the babbler. .. The intermediates on the trains die from cholera water and the Kipling reader/listener is being babbled to death.
