Costumes not only helped Peter to overcome his stage fright, but also added stage personas to their music. Keep in mind that according to Melody Maker, Genesis was the best live band of their days, of their time. surpassing Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, etc. The cstumes was some sort of brand for Genesis when playing live. Love these guys. I am only fortunate to say that saw them live in 1975! Great times!!

As I sit here watching and hearing this compilation, now 59 years old, I feel the same joy in my soul that I’ve felt over the last 45 years. The tears in my eyes come from my heart, as I’m aware of the never-changing timelessness of what Genesis means to me. The friends with whom I first enjoyed the music are gone, but the memories are blessings. I’m going to see Peter next fall here in So Cal. Life is precious and good health is something we all should treasure each day that it is ours. Just ask Phil, or Carl Palmer…and always remember Chris Squire, Alan White, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Neil Peart, just to name a few….❤

Good idea this summary PLANx. I first got stunned by the photos on LIVE (no to mention the sound of the band) the first album I ever had in my hands when I was still in secondary school. Peter's inner mental world back then was big part of the band's fuel on stage though not all of them felt glad about the spotlight Peter created as he began creating other "personalities" to illustrate his lyrics. And what simple resources and how little he had and used and look what he became, a legend in rock theatrics. How could have it all been without those costumes? Probably just the same, musically speaking, brilliant as they alone can be, but the impact and the distance they created from other live acts of the era did mean so much to them and their audience. Could luckily meet and greet Peter Gabriel in Santiago about 16 years after that first time I opened my eyes this big and my ears went what?! while listening to Tony Banks' initial notes on Watcher on LIVE. Moments never to be forgotten. Thank you Peter Gabriel and Genesis. One last word of praise, what jaw-dropping bands and versions of Genesis' classics Steve Hackett achieves in this new era of his Genesis revisited act.

Peter said way back when that he based his stage persona on Alice Cooper. He excelled at being a sort of mysterious traveller who was somewhat detached from the audience. His use of humor between songs was strange, but he knew that he was there to make an unforgettable impression on concert goers, in a way that was way different than most. He was not there to rock- out with you and hey, let's boogie in the aisles... No, more like sink into your seat and marvel at the incredible musicianship & stage show that was Genesis. And hopefully, due to something you might've injested that night, have your face feel like it was melting off while they were playing The Battle of Epping Forest... 😎

Being a performer can be really really scary while also being one of the most exhilarating feelings, wearing costumes can often help in many instances, I know quite a fair number of performers who dressed up, or just wear masks, even I am happy to walk off-stage if the opportunity presents itself out of fear from stagefright.

The truth is that although they played magic, Genesis was a rather boring band to see live, they played flawlessly and all and they were all on their instruments and there wasn't much appeal to them. Tony Banks minding his own, Steve Hackett just sitting there, etc. So Pete decided to wear costumes and blow everyone's mind off, it paid off, as the band became much more popular as a result of it and many people started to feel curious about it. But it got a little bit of hand.
