The Theatrical Agency sketch was written by Herman Timberg, and it originated in the Marx Brothers' 1921 vaudeville tabloid "On the Mezzanine." It later became the opening scene in their 1924 Broadway debut, "I'll Say She Is." Unlike their other Broadway musicals, "I'll Say She Is" was never adapted for film, but the Brothers recreated the Theatrical Agency scene on a Paramount soundstage in 1931. The resulting short was used as a promotional trailer for the Brothers' film "Monkey Business," and included in the Paramount compilation film "The House That Shadows Built." The role of the Agent is played by Ben Taggart, the Captain from "Monkey Business," who also plays a police officer in "Horse Feathers."
"I'll Say She Is," the Lost Marx Brothers Musical, is in the midst of its first-ever revival. After premiering at Marxfest, Noah Diamond's adaptation of "I'll Say She Is" went on to become the smash hit of the 2014 New York International Fringe Festival. The show returns in a full production at New York's Connelly Theater in the spring of 2016.
