“The Masque of the Red Death” is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. Published in 1842, it remains one of Poe's most famous works. In the story, an unnamed country is ravaged by a deadly plague known as the “Red Death.” In an attempt to escape the disease, Prince Prospero and a thousand of his friends retreat to a secluded abbey where they indulge in a lavish costume ball. However, as the night progresses, a mysterious figure dressed in a red robe and mask appears at the party, and the guests begin to realize that they may not be as safe as they thought.
An interesting question for the listener to ponder: what is the identity of the character telling the story?
