Talks at Google welcomes Kit Yates, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and co-director of the Centre for Mathematical Biology at the University of Bath. Kit’s specialism is applied mathematics, the application of maths to problems that arise in different fields such as science, engineering and computer science.
Kit discusses his first book, The Maths of Life and Death. The book explores the true stories of life-changing events in which the application - or misapplication - of mathematics has played a critical role: patients crippled by faulty genes and entrepreneurs bankrupted by faulty algorithms; innocent victims of miscarriages of justice and the unwitting victims of software glitches. You’ll discover how many people need to be in a room for there to be a greater than 50% chance of two or more sharing a birthday, how ‘facts’ can be manipulated to confuse the public and whether it’s statistically safer to be locked in a room with a bear or a toddler with a gun.
