One reason to use a maul over a greatsword is that bludgeoning is less frequently resisted and a little more often a vulnerability on some enemies(see skeletons and ice mephets) also can still be used as a tool when not fighting.

I call the maul a greathammer. It fits the naming convention (greataxe, greatsword) and avoids comparison with a bear's attack.

I would also argue that the Maul in D&D makes for the best foundation for building a "Pollaxe." While such weapons are thought of as Polearms in an objective sense, this designation is far less useful in the contexts of D&Ds weapon designs. Though often thought of as quite large at a bit over 5 feet long, this is unlikely to translate into the Reach property. In this case, Topple and stun would make for very interesting and plausible features for either form. I would consider adding higher critical chance (Nat. 19/20) to simulate the power of the weapon against armor. Combine that with Armor rules that might render creatures wearing heavy armor as Resistant to Bludgeoning damage

Pure, unadulterated intention. The hammer makes a point, that every else are the nails.

Best weapon I've ever got in a campaign, an adamantine silvered Maul as a dwarf battlemaster with proficiency in smithing and masonry, as well as being granted a boon that gave me 23 strength. came in real handy when facing a beholder and everyone else's magic weapons got disabled by the anti magic field, as well as general demolition and many MANY Statues lol

IMO my favorite maul-wielding character I’ve made is a hobgoblin Paladin with a kanabo, as part of a Japanese campaign. Hobgoblin in this setting were Oni, so it was only fitting.

I have a very similar character planned, that makes a ton of attacks of opportunity, and moves on others' turns due to being a Vengeance Paladin (level 7 ability, plus the Tunnel Fighter fighting style)

Excellent video. Laughed out loud at the gryphon smash and vodka reference. The maul has been a favorite barbarian weapon of mine for a long time and the "Hammer" was a favorite maul weapon of mine since the day Guild Wars was released and my Warrior started pancaking Charr with it. The greatest image in my mind with a maul is the versatility of choking up on the handle to deliver faster, lighter knocks and jabs while finishing the fight with a full on bell ringer that plants the enemy's head between their feet. A full round action to attack with Disadvantage and deal double damage comes to mind. If you knock them prone first, though... *yeahboi.gif* 😂

I think saying my that a splitting axe is a maul Is kinda weird

That IS a maul. Called a splitting maul. The axe blade can function as expected, while the hammer face is great for driving a wedge; it can also be used for driving tent stakes and such. A modern maul isn’t just a big hammer.

Thanks for the review! This is MY favorite weapon for sure. I agree that it should have the Topple abilty, but Stun is something I'd reserve for a Magical version of the weapon...👍
