I feel like Phase 4 is trying to have it's cake and eating it too. Like, a lot of the shows and movies are trying to be self-contained. However, the phase is also trying to have a major theme in the multiverse, and you end up with an overarching issue where these individual plots are set in the same universe, but do little or no effort in trying to connect them together. Seriously, Loki, No Way Home, and MOM are all about the multiverse, but they don't feel like they affect each other in any way.

So perfectly stated. The MCU is trying to give us standalone projects, while building a multiverse story at the same time. That is not a good idea in almost any way. The movies/shows contradict each other. Characters don't seem to know things or just ignored things for the sake of the plot. Why didn't Thor go to Eternity and wish for The Infinity Stones to lose all power? Why not use the dark magic book(forgot the name sorry) to destroy Thanos or imprison him? A multiverse, imo, is never a good idea and the MCU is really messing the concept up.

Yeah any case I can recall off the top of my head, where a piece of media tries to address the critics in their tv show. Reminds me of teen titans go. They made a fair few episode to address their critics, only to come off as having no idea what the criticisms are or failing to understand why the critics think the way they do. Often being rather hostile in the way they address their critics, making me truly doubt if the point was to change the minds of their critics or just to shame them. While making their fans suffer through a episode that is more focus on attacking the critics, they forget to be entertaining. Which also has the downside of making the creators look insane, if not just simply childish with the way they react. For Ultraman Z. It had one episode that wasn't the greatest. You could see what they were going for but seem like it needed just a bit more to it. To properly flesh things out. With the idea having been handle better in past ultraman shows. Which thankfully, they had the mind set of creating a good show. For overall Z is a blast to watch. If they had the mind set that is rather common these days with western creators. They would tank the quality of the show, just to get back at a few critics. For the best way to deal with any critics, is just to focus on making a good product. Which is surprising when professionals, who are meant to have higher standards then fan fic writers can't understand.

9:08, I think that after Endgame, whose title signifies ending, the best thing to do would be to bring back stand-alones but that instead they’ve given practically anything not named Moon Knight a forced connection to the MCU to make sure you have to watch everything else to get to the point of understanding anything that’s going on so that the movies feel less like movies and more like a homework assignment. That’s what I think the problem is. Excessive reliance on shared universes.
@barret-xiii
Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Phase 1 films pretty much all feel fine as standalone stories. They're tied to a greater whole, but their purpose was mainly to introduce these characters. Thor's film was the only one with a really important connection to The Avengers 2012 due to the presence of Loki as the main villain. And from The Avengers 2012 onward, almost every new character introduced was relegated to a supporting role, including Hulk who got his own standalone film for Phase 1. After 2012, everything was built to work towards Endgame, and once it came and went, there's little reason to stay invested. The big story is finally over, yet they still want to tell stories. Unfortunately, because of such big events happening, it'd be really weird to tell stories that don't intertwine with others due to all the shit that went down the past 10+ years. And it feels like they want to keep everything connected so they can build up to another grand threat (I think they're planning on bringing in Galactus?). The problem is there haven't been and good hints in-show for that, so the constant interlinking of stories just feels like they're making a massive narrative... that's going nowhere, but is somehow still important to watch everything to get the full story. It really does feel like a homework assignment.

For me, Phase 4 has been really hit or miss and sadly it's been going down. Starting with WandaVision, I thought it was pretty good. The only thing that bother me was hearing afterword. Doctor Strange was going to be the hero in the show but it was changed because for ridiculous reasons. Captain America and the Winter Solider was fine, I was excited to birth of a new villian. Loki, Moon Knight and Hawkeye was the best show from Phase 4. The only one that bombed was She-hulk, in everything I've seen so far from Phase 4. How does a 9 episode series have pacing issues!? I've seen long multiple long running series better paced then this. This show needed maybe 4 1/2 of the episodes of the nine that was streamed. Her show should of ended after Mat left Jen's place, then start having Jen doing superhero work on the side. Or have Jen defend herself in court from her hero actives. Heck, I would have settled for having the show focused on courtroom cases, but have it funny like the ace attorney law series. I think I laughed more times watching Judge Judy, then I had with all of She-Hulk. I don't hate She-Hulk, I have seen her character in plenty of different cartoons shows. She's pretty great in all of the other cartoons she's in. But this show, she just sucks. There is only 5 things I really enjoyed here: Mat, Madisyn, Nikki, Bonding with Bruce and that scene when Jen talks about her relationship with She-Hulk, that's it. Wow, I was not trying to go into a rant about She-Hulk but my god, the writers!

She-Hulk ignored the lore and subverted the character while, simultaneously, shitting all over established characters and lore. Hawkeye made Hawkeye a co-star in his own show and Wanda-Vision went to some really ridiculous, vaguely stereotypically-female places that really panned out in the *worst* of ways with the move... Doctor Strange 2, which was also another bait-and-switch, just like Hawkeye. Loki took a dump all over Loki and, once again, made him essentially a co-star in his own show and Black Widow was way too late and incredibly dumb anyway. All of these were relatively unintelligent, poorly written shows that went more for emotions and messages over really dyed-in-the-wool, true-blue representations of what each of them should have been. They all went off-track in favor of Disney-messaging and paid for it in stories that, however they started, ended somewhere completely different and they were, honestly, never that great to begin with. It's been strange, seeing this subversions over and over and over again, of the legacy characters or of male characters, even when it gets to the point where it grates, narratively, or grates, especially, logically. It doesn't fit, it doesn't flow and you know it, you feel it, but they keep pushing it anyway and it just grates more and more. I really don't think that anyone sane is going to be talking about any of the recent movies or the Disney+ extensions in any favorable way inside of a year from their respective release dates - none of them make sense, none of them resonate and few of them matter and those that *do* matter, they often do not matter in a positive sense. They matter in the same way that the latest Dr. Who matters ;D She overwrote lore, destroyed lore and absolutely *ruined* a legacy XD Pertinent? Sure. Good? Hell no.

When they first started the MCU, the crap that is going on now in the movies and TV shows was going on in the comics back then. When the MCU first started they didn't just use lesser known characters and build them up, they used the characters they way they were LONG ago compared to now in the comics. Even more so they seem to burn throw what is really a great library of stories from LONG ago that could have kept them going for well past 30 years before even hitting on the stuff going on in the comics now. It was when they brought on Carol Danvers, as not only starting off as Captain Marvel but how she is as Captain Marvel in the comics right now and not back when she was fun and cool as Miss Marvel, that's when I KNEW for a pure fact that after Endgame, they where going to be pushing for the stuff going on in the comics right now! If Kang is about to win she could marry sue the kevin tell him to rewrite the final act so that Kang could lose. Imagine she was in in the Infinity wars.... we could not have seen EndGame lol!

I've felt kinda "forced" to watch the recent MCU shows. After Loki my excitement for MCU content has quickly declined. I didnt even finish She-hulk and nothing upcoming is really grabbing my attention anymore, except maybe Guardians 3 and Antman. Contrast this to before Endgame when I'd consume any MCU content I could find.

I'd say that the MCU actually visibly started to come apart actually at End Game. End Game is where we really see the start of Feige in particular intentionally ruining the characters by disfigureing them into polar opposites like soy boy Hulk and Fat Thor. The problem actually goes bar faaar earlier in the MCU though. The MCU wasn't just started and created by one person calling all the shots with total authority like the position they've placed Feige in. It was started by a number of creative people like Jon Favreau, Joe Johnston, Art Marcum, Hawk Ostby, Mark Fergus, and many more. They did have oversight on those movies and it was filtered through a number of corporate people who made sure the deals got done. Feige happened to be one of those people that made sure the deals got done and that's how he ended up as the head of that division. Problem is all the real creative talent decided they wanted to so other things such as Favreau moving over to SW with Lucas Films. Most, but not all mind you, of the actual talented people moved on leaving the MCU to be ran by much less creative individuals. That's why later into the MCU leading up to the back half to end game gets criticism for being too formulaic and kind of boring. If that wasn't bad enough, after Black Panther Feige was given total control over everything Marvel and he is clearly not a very creative person from what we've seen on screen.

The only Phase 4 Related I've seen were WandaVision, What-If Show, and Spider-Man: NWH... I only loved watching Spider-Man: NWH, it's not that great in terms of Writing Structure but was a Fun but Flawed Film. I thought WandaVision started strong but ended poorly. What-If Show was a headache! I dropped it after 5 Episodes! I don't give a damn for their other shows/movies at all & what made irked me the most was the Flanderization of She-Hulk (and my man The Hulk😖), meet Psuedo-SheHulk everybody! I for 1 strongly agree what you are saying and that their "New Direction" lacks Focus, actual Creativity, and just disrespecting both the Original Source Material & their Audience (Hate to be blunt but you have to be Naive if they are not doing that at all, and this is coming from someone who isn't that smart).

I'd like to give the MCU the benefit of the doubt and just say that they missed the mark, but with every new property to come out this feels more and more deliberate. Almost like they don't even try to deliver excellence anymore. Why strive for success if you can just condition your audience to accept bland, mediocre "yet another Marvel action hero movie" faire and make decent money? It's like they're franchising, much like previously beloved fastfood places that turn their signature dishes into a bland mush that can be made anywhere by anyone with at least three functional limbs to the same low standards.

Not to mention an extreme hatred for men is also starting to creep it's way into the MCU[extreme/extremist feminism] as well as Gen Z and all their baggage as well, being so freaking Woke that it becomes so annoying and cringey that it's hard to even watch anymore, that goes with other shows and movies outside of the MCU, basically Hollywood is trying way to hard to stay inside the box and cater to Gen Z and the woke culture, because their afraid of cancel culture which honestly is ruining everything good in this world, ya can't even sneeze these days without offending someone.

Ignoring all of the wokeness, the MCU lost focus. The Infinity Stones were definite objects with set powers and they had a purpose. The multiverse is a vague concept, and it's not clear what things are leading to. We all knew that the stones would be gathered and there'd be a showdown with Thanos since 2012. Outside of some vague hints about Kang the Conqueror- a hopelessly inferior villain next to Thanos- we have no idea where things are going.

They talk about "trolls" who they are actually talking about actual She Hulk fans because they are the only ones who would care about it. Its an ego trip and vengeance they wanted to seek from people who didn't like Captain Marvel or many phase 4 decisions. Sucks for them because you can't troll "trolls" because all they want is reaction. But the fans are the ones who decide if the show will continue or be successful. Unless the studio foolishly wants to stay in their dream world and lose tons of money.

0:28 The main ingredient of the formula is public interest. Without it, any other ingredients are moot. Nobody heard the news about the new Universal monster movies and said "Ooh! I can't wait to see it!" They said "Really? Is there a market for that? Has there been some dearth of Universal monster movie adaptations I'm not aware of? Are you sure you guys don't want to test the waters by having at least one movie hit (or miss) before you announce the connected universe? Okay. Good luck with that." The fact that it was connected was supposed to be the selling point. Well, that plus the celebrity faces. They figured those were the main ingredients of the formula. They were incorrect.

I think the infinity war and endgame was like they were harvesting all their plotpoints and characters for the bountiful feast. Now that's over they go back to the field and it's empty with only a few lose ends and the soil has little to grow from. So phase 4 was "throw whatever at the wall to see what sticks" and hope the deluge of content with fertilize the field of new ideas and characters. Now if that's successful or not depends on if people LIKE those ideas and characters and it's not really been happening for the most part.

I thought Phase 4 was when they made it apparent they are trying to make the original fans of these IPs hate them now. It's being made bad and pushing weird agendas on purpose in part to piss off the fans of the original IP. I think the appropriate response is the same we would have for any random bad fan fiction we stumbled across online or out in the world. Mockery. It's not canon and they can dump as many billions of $$$ into telling me it is until they're bankrupt but it won't make be believe something like that. This stuff is just bad fan fiction that Disney is legally allowed to use the names of because they spent millions to do so. If you had those millions to waste, you too could have made your own fan fiction universe, put it out on the silver screen, and tell everyone "this is the canon now" but nothing stops all of the rest of society from saying "no. it's not." In short-I don't care what they do anymore with their IPs. None of that is any more than poor fan fiction with a ton of money dumped into it in the hopes that tricks me into treating it like canon. Sorry, but that trick doesn't work on me. Not anymore, anyway. The more they wanna make it bad or make it to piss me off, the more desperate and humorous it comes off as.

I don't think it's not having something to work towards. I think it's just incompetence. The writing is horrible, the directing is sub-par, the casting is . . . well, the casting is still good, but the actors are all wasted in their roles. Marvel seems to think that they don't have to try anymore, that we'll buy anything, so they're trying to milk the cash cow as hard and fast as they can. It's destroying the quality of the films and will kill the franchise.

Phase 4 is interesting, I really liked moon knight, Loki, wandavision and spider man no way home. Falcon and winter solider was pretty good imo. I like Thor 4 but it felt meh throwing away the guardians and thors emotional baggage away so quickly. I was okay with dr strange MoM but I didn’t like how aggressive Wanda got it felt like a big leap even after her show. She hulk…😬 Phase 4 has been a lot and they definitely should slow down, a lot of the backbone and story efforts seem to be in the tv shows, if your just watching the movies I can see being disappointed with this phase but with the shows I feel like it’s been a pretty decent phase. I do wish they’d treat the VFX workers and everyone better because the quality doesn’t really matter if the workers are mistreated…

Movies/tv shows need to stop being about writers and start being about characters. Nearly every top 10 list has beautiful, 3-dimensional characters at its centre, whether it's a grounded drama or a Sci-fi/fantasy epic. The most beloved movies in history have likeable, relatable people front and centre. Do black people hate Doc and Marty? Do white people hate Red and Blade? I know I don't. When writers insert themselves into stories, it becomes nothing more than self indulgent masturbation. There's an audience for that, sure, but it's not a big one and it has no resonance with the vast majority of people.

I think Phase 4 is fine. Not the best of the Phases, but fine. I think it's clear the majority of the writers are still putting in effort (except for the She-Hulk writers). Also, many new characters within the MCU, I feel, are well done. Kate Bishop is a great character and I sense a mentor/student friendship between her and Clint. I like Ms. Marvel! I don't deny her power change was bad, but they stay true to who she is as a person. The only character I cannot and will not defend is She-Hulk! Jen is completely unlikable, she does nothing truly heroic the entire show, and she never has character growth! I've never read the She-Hulk comics, but hearing what you and other fans say about Jen from the comics, this is a poor representation of a beloved superhero. These are just my thoughts though. Let me know what you agree and disagree with.

All of the sudden, Phase 4 introduced a whole range of factions that were all pulling the strings from behind the scene on some degree. The Ten Rings, the Red Room, the Eternals, the TVA all were pulling the strings throughout history and only now have been revealed. WTF is this canon, really? Kang alone has destroyed everything meaningful from the previous phases. The characters from Phase 1-3 didn't really make any choice. Kang eliminated every timeline where they would have behaved differently, making him the ultimate decider of everything from Phase 1-3. Comic readers never really liked the Time Variance Authority when it was introduced to begin with. Bringing it to the MCU has been a huge mistake.

Oh I agree with you that Phase 4 feels rather directionless, and it's as if the shows and movies aren't or hardly affecting each other. Two other big points is 1) the screenwriting, the stories at their core, have fallen in quality and coherency, and 2) Marvel really does feel like they're going for quantity over quality. I've seen some people say, "Well the MCU doesn't always have to connect and have a big overarching story." The issue with that is the MCU was designed to be connected, at least up through Endgame. So it's fair to say (some) audience members are now confused of as to why Phase 4 feels rather disconnected. At the same time, unless I'm mistaken, it still feels like the MCU is wanting to build to the next big thing - I think it's supposed to be a show down with Kang - but they're doing a poor job of it. So the MCU as a whole right now is, to me and I'm sure many others, unclear of what they're even doing. Are they or are they not trying to build to another Big Thing? Is the MCU actually attempting to just to one off stories with no connection to anything else? It's messy.

Thor underperformed and I think a lot is riding on Wakanda Forever being successful for them to decide what to do about the future. So far the direction of the MCU is aimless and they really shot themselves in the foot by jumping into the multiverse pool without a plan and focusing on their extreme misandrist messaging.
