Red isn't associated with fire because people thought it was alive, it's just because we didn't used to have a separate word for orange, it was considered a shade of red called "yellow-red". It's the same reason red hair is orange and red onions are purple. We called them red before we had a distinct concept of their actual colours.

Tay Sem what? Hades wasn’t hell for the Ancient Greek. Some people did call the underworld “Hades” but Hades was just the god of the dead. He wasn’t seen as evil, in the way modern people view Satan. In fact, the Greeks believed EVERYONE went to the underworld when they died regardless of whether they were good or bad. The Greek underworld was more or less divided into Elysium (where the good people went. Basically their version of heaven) and Tartarus (a hot, fiery place filled with evil. This is where the bad people went) so the Greeks didn’t view the entire underworld as something “cold”

I love this! I knew I would, when I saw it I went, “OoooOOoooohhh,” and immediately clicked. I’ve always loved color psychology and red specifically. Before my mentor died, she told me, “I want you to be the girl in the red lipstick. Different, vibrant, and not afraid to show it.” I was pretty shy and had a confidence issue because I was ill. Since then, I’ve tried to embrace my individuality and even weirdness. In my photo on here you can see my red mustang! I wanted it to match, after all! So for me, red is an homage and a reminder to not just exist, but to live. In a way, I’d adore for this to be a series, especially because blue is so intertwined with reflection and intelligence but was always so frickin hard to create in reality (vivid purple doubly so, part of why it wasn’t in flags). But I also understand if you have other content you’re way more jazzed about and I’m just grateful to have gotten this!! Have a wonderful year next year; you deserve all your success!

I knew about the connotations of red in art and media for a while but the color never really had any kind of emotional impact for me on screen until I watched The Handmaid’s Tale. Specifically the part when the handmaids are washing blood off of the wall where “criminals” are hung and the bright red blood is flooding into the white snow as almost a reflection of the handmaids themselves(red dresses, white headpieces). It really impacted me and made me think about the symbolic implications of the blood in the snow, what the handmaids wore, and the connection of the two. White is pure, and at the most basic level the handmaids’ job is to bring a pure life into the world. However, the white headpiece is the smallest part of the handmaids’ costume and is used to cover their face. Covering of the face usually indicates either that the character is hiding something or that the character feels shame. The handmaids feel shame about their job even though the result is a child which is something usually shown as pure and innocent. The red represents the women’s fertility, which is all they have that is valuable to the society they are trapped in. A sort of scarlet letter to show they are their sexuality. But, the characters are always bathed in red, overpowering the white purity like how the blood covered the snow. I really could go on and on about the meticulous use of color in the show, but this comment is already long enough.

An Interesting note: The Nazi flag itself utilises red, along with black and white, to create a striking flag. If there is any symbolic meaning behind the flag from a Nazi point of view, I cannot discover, but perhaps the Nazis own obsession with blood.
@kylemaljevac5482

TechnicalHydra It could be associated with blood. Though according the Hitlers book, the black-white-red motif illustrated is based on the colours of the flags of the German Empire, for which Hitler payed tribute to display the greatness he believe was associated with Germany at the time. The colour scheme was also commonly associated with anti-Weimar German nationalists, who denounced the black-red-gold flag of the Weimar Republic.

I'd love to hear more of these colour analyses. Green's got an interesting duality too; it could signify life and health, as in a flourishing, leafy tree, or it could signify illness and disease, as in a sickly green face. Like, in Harry Potter, the main hero has green eyes while the main villain has red eyes, and that seems perfectly natural. But the main hero also is in the house which has red as its colour, while the main villain is in the house which has green as its colour, and that also seems perfectly natural. It would be interesting to hear more about that.

For other colors the metaphorical range tends to be fairly narrow, green is bounty/life, blue is sadness/depth, black is darkness/corruption, white is light/purity. Red on the other hand shows an ironically grey nature in spite of the color's vibrant nature, shown in how much unfathomable range of expression the color has. Red can be life by invoking images of the heart and love while simultaneously representing death by invoking images of blood and carnage. It can seen as a color of warmth when being related to the comfort of a cozy fire, despite fire also doubling as one of the major symbols of destruction. It's a color that piques you're interest because it is a color of possibility, a color that can represent anything before meaning is put onto it, so our curious nature inevitably has our eyes drawn to the color to find out which side of the coin this representation of red falls on. Love or hate? Life or death? Warmth or destruction? We will only know once the movie decides to show its hand when the main motifs and conflicts start to be revealed, but until that happens we have to be satisfied with the fact that red is just simply an eye catching color even if we don't necessarily know why it is such a crowd pleaser

Red is symbolic for Esau Edom and we know their the people who run the world. For Esau is the end of the world but Jacob is that which follows. 2ESDRAS 6:9

............. Saudações
