The Mellowaires were a 1941-42 Swing vocal group signed by Capitol Records in 1942 to sing backup for various early Capitol artists such as Ella Mae Morse with Freddie Slack, Martha Tilton, Johnny Mercer, and Paul Whiteman. In this 1941 Soundie, they sing a Swing version of "Rockabye Baby." An alternate title is "Lullaby in Swing" - the opening title card that says "Lullaby in Rhythm" is incorrect.
The singers with The Mellowaires were lovely Barbara "Bobbie" Canvin (with flowered robe & hair bow), who had sung with The Music Maids and later became a member of Kay Thompson's MGM chorus and a prolific voice dubber for actresses who couldn't sing, blonde Sally Sweetland, also a prolific movie dubber & later vocal coach, Lee Gotch, the toothy Lothario in this Soundie and a member of various vocal groups, Tony Paris, who was later a member of the popular Starlighters vocal group from 1946 into the 1950's, and Patti (or Patty) Morgan, who had sung with Charlie Barnet's Quintones.
The name of the blonde actress/model in the apartment is unknown (to me) but she also appeared in at least one other Soundie and in the "Happiness Bound" number in "Hit The Ice" (1942). She has a striking resemblance to a young Judi Dench, the British actress.
Thanks to Jazz Archivist Mark Cantor, author of a two-volume book about Soundies, for this rare item.
