Possibly the smartest thing this movie did was make viewers WORRY that it was going to be cannibalism, and then shock us by having it be something much stranger, funnier, and more thoughtfully entertaining. Manages to be elegant and campy all at once! :)

There was a deleted scene where the food critic told a story that Slowik did disappear from the culinary scene at one point, and rediscovered him in a Korean taco truck of all places (probably because he wanted to reignite his passion for cooking again by moving to something simpler instead of high society gourmet dishes), pulling him back into the life he hated.

I love how Ralph Finnes played it. It would've been so easy to play the character as a Hannibal Lector style psychopath. Instead, he plays it like a tortured artist having the world's worst midlife crisis. Like all the joy has been sucked out of his passion and he's just weary.

Thank you for serving us this delicious reaction, darling! I liked this movie *way* more than I expected (my feelings re: Mr Fiennes are.... complicated) and immediately left the theatre and got my hands on the script before I went back for a second viewing. The rewatch was just as satisfying as the first helping. Most of the changes I think were for the better (the critic and her assistant were originally genderflipped, the Actor was supposed to be Daniel Radcliffe and they were constantly referencing Victor Frankenstein - which I actually didn't hate - and movie Margot is leagues more interesting than the original version) but the script does make one point clear that I sort of missed, although it might just work better this way. In the original, Tyler (named Craig, and actually married to Margot) bungles his shot because he's so nervous he forgets all the practice he's had; Chef tells him off, and then gives him a chance to learn, so he goes to the back and starts washing dishes. In the movie, it's clear that Tyler screws up because he doesn't actually know how to cook; he understands flavors because he's trained his palate, and knows what a Pacojet is because he's a pretentious dipwad, but would have no clue how to use it. I think the movie works better, but I did like the slight redemption offered in the original. Although, this Tyler didn't really deserve it.

Glad you enjoyed! Its one of my favorite films I've seen so far this year. When she asks for it to go, I always think back to when he told her he perfectly calibrated the menu so no one would fill up. But her getting something completely unplanned, the burger, that calculation was thrown off. She made him feel some joy cooking for someone again, joy watching them eat and enjoy the food but she couldn't finish it there and he knew that this was a supplementary dish so for her to fully enjoy the menu, she had to be able to finish the burger later. I agree some mercy is there because she showed she wasn't one of the people that made him hate his art but maybe that was more subconscious. I think he might have consciously been thinking that he wanted her to be able to finish the burger. Also I love the last shot of the passionate bite. It can be interpreted many different ways but I think it was her demonstrating defiance against Chef. Ultimately we all know, in the real world, people don't deserve to die simply because a food critic does their job, even if they're harsh. Or because their parents paid for them to go to Brown or because they might work for a corrupt company or are an overly passionate foodie. Chef was, like he said, a monster and ego, like you said, 100% played a role in this evening he planned for them. Chef was treated like a god through much of the film and acted like one too. Chef repeats a few times about the givers or the takers, the servers or the eaters. Eventually, everyone bought into his shit. They were thanking him by the end and accepted death. Erin played into his psychosis but I feel like the bite was a silent way of showing, that was her using his own BS against him. She didn't survive because she bought into it. She survived because she didn't.

I think Margot/Erin gets away with it at the end because she's just that good. She and the chef are both in the service industry, catering to wealthy (and mostly unappreciative) clients, but there's more to them both than that. She's more than a pretty girl in a nice outfit. She's smart and talented at cutting right to what someone wants most and giving it to them. I get the sense most of her clients don't even use her for sexual things, and the downside of being a professional in that line is that when they do, they would usually be unconcerned with making it pleasurable for her. They only care about themselves, much the way Chef is constantly crafting food that is going into other people, and they only care about the prestige or the power that access to his work affords them, rather than appreciating the art and technique (and probably amazing flavors) on display. She's able to not only understand that he wants to be appreciated for his food, and actually still cares about that, but also how to give him the chance to make someone else happy while getting back to a time in his life before the influence and notice and 'you are someone, you are now elite' was thrust upon him. He still loves the food, but he no longer sees joy in the people he makes it for, and therefore no longer derives joy from it. She sees how important that was for him, and is able to give him that. Combined with the fact that she wasn't really supposed to be there, and he makes the choice to give her the dish to go.

But your reaction to it is definitely what saves any movie for me. I watched it for Ralph Fiennes as a Psycho Chef BTW.
