The MESSENGER mission to Mercury

Launched in 2004, MESSENGER (short for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging) embarked on a daring seven-year voyage. After enduring the blistering heat and intense radiation environment around Mercury, it achieved a historic feat in 2011 - becoming the first spacecraft to ever enter orbit around the planet.
This wasn't just a symbolic victory. MESSENGER's three-year orbital mission completely transformed our knowledge of Mercury. Here are some of its groundbreaking achievements:
Unveiling a Hidden World: For decades, only about 45% of Mercury's surface had been imaged by Mariner 10. MESSENGER filled in the gaps, providing us with a complete map of the planet for the very first time.
A Planet Forged in Fire: MESSENGER's data revealed Mercury's surface composition, dominated by iron and hinting at a violent volcanic past.
A Magnetic Enigma: The probe discovered a surprisingly strong magnetic field around Mercury, despite its lack of a molten outer core - a finding that continues to challenge our understanding of planetary magnetism.
A Shrinking World: Through subtle measurements, MESSENGER detected that Mercury is actually shrinking ever so slightly. This wrinkle in the planet's fabric offers scientists clues about its internal structure and history.
In 2015, after exceeding its planned mission duration, MESSENGER's story reached a dramatic yet glorious conclusion. Running low on fuel, the spacecraft intentionally impacted the surface of Mercury, becoming a permanent part of the planet it had spent years studying.

It’s not often you get to watch Mercury pass right in front of the sun, because such an event occurs only about 13 times every century and requires special binocular filters or telescopes to see. But that’s why we have NASA, whose Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the spectacle in its righteous entirety:
The MESSENGER spacecraft is a box-shaped spacecraft with a semi-cylindrical thermal shade and two solar panel wings. The thermal shade is made of ceramic cloth and protects the spacecraft from the sun's intense environment. The spacecraft's power comes from a two-panel gallium arsenide/germanium solar array. The panels are rotatable and include optical solar reflectors to balance the array's temperature. Power is stored in a 23-ampere-hour nickel-hydrogen battery.
