The Metamorphosis is a novel by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. It has been called one of the foundational works of fiction of the 20th century and is studied in colleges and universities throughout the Western world. The story begins when Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman, wakes up to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, scary insect-like creature. The reason for Gregor's transformation is never explained, and Kafka himself never offers an explanation. The remainder of Kafka's novela deals with Gregor's attempts to adapt to his new situation as he tries to become a burden to his parents and sister, who are disgusted by the terrible, harmful creature that Gregor has become.
