In this beautiful metaphor, which is found in Verse 22 of Ātmabodha written by Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, the moon being reflected in the water represents consciousness being reflected in the mind, and the ripples in the water represent the vṛttis or activities of the mind. Just as the ripples that belong to the water are falsely attributed to the moon, in the same way, due to a lack of discernment, the vṛttis that belong to the mind are falsely attributed to consciousness (ātma, self).
So try to know yourself as the moon, not the ripples. And just as the moon shining on the water isn't really affected by the ripples of the water, you (consciousness), shining on your mind, isn't really affected by the ripples of your mind.

Romanisation
ajñānānmānasopādheḥ kartṛtvādīni cātmani.

Translation
The tremblings that belong to the waters are attributed through ignorance to the reflected moon dancing on it: likewise agency of action, of enjoyment and of other limitations (which really belong to the mind) are delusively attributed to the Self (Atman).
