In Hong Kong, known for its urban landscape, 40% of the land consists of public green spaces teeming with diverse flora and fauna, including 260 butterfly species. The University of Hong Kong's School of Biological Sciences is conducting a long-term study on the migratory patterns of danaid butterflies. Led by Professor Tim Bonebrake, the team aims to understand if and how these butterflies migrate. Although they have observed butterflies traveling within Hong Kong, they lack conclusive evidence of migration. To unravel the mysteries, they are studying three danaid species and encouraging the public to submit photos and sighting locations. The project's goal is to gather public reports to identify migratory routes and destinations, aiding in the conservation of danaid butterflies and other migratory species, and preserving Hong Kong's forests and habitats.
