They are the same as the missiles used for the real thing. The only difference is there is no warhead fitted. So having a hundred per cent fail rate in the last two tests is cause for concern. Maybe we should buy the French missiles for the new subs being built. I'm glad the government has complete confidence in Trident, because no one else does now. "Admiral, why have you nuked Poland, Spain and Egypt? plus incinerated several million tons of fish in the Atlantic". Well we put the co ordinates for Russia in but there seems to have been a small problem.
@mitchelloates9406

Spot on. Complete load of BS, saying that it failed because "it was just a test missile and not a real one" - USN Retired submariner, 77 to 97, with most of my career on our version of Trident subs - when you go to the expense of doing a live test fire, you're using an actual missile, with a dummy payload, because the whole point of a test firing is YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THE BLOODY SYSTEM WORKS IF YOU EVER HAVE TO USE IT!!!! And the excuse of the system being "old" is utter bollocks as well - what they're actually saying is "we couldn't be bothered to spend the time and money to do proper upkeep and maintenance on the missiles over the years".

The UK does not spend enough, agreed, but the US tax payer gets much of the money back in procurements by the UK of US military equipment, Chinooks, C17s, rifles, Boeing Wedgetail and AWACS prior to that etc etc. On top of that the US taxpayer has RAF Fylingdales and it's 1500 miles eastwards seating of BMEWS. I think in the case of the UK the US does very well.
