It´s a shame that all these sub-cultures and their different styles & outfits got lost. We had a lot of these in Vienna / Austria in the late 70´s, the 80´s. The Mods and Modettes, New Romantics later Goth´s, Punks, Skinheads, Skin-Byrds, Rockabilly´s, Teddy´s, Rockers, . . . Today you see everywhere the same people. Everywhere it's just a copy of a copy of a copy - without personality, without style.

Totally agree. What happened? Technology. From the military to consumerism. Enslavement. And we bought it . Loved it soaked it up and played right into the elites hands .

Actually this is wrong. Mod started in Hamburg right after the war. It was called the Post War Modernist Movement. German youth having survived the Second World War like all of Europe were stuck in an ancient way of living and being ruled by Monarchies and the like living with not colour no options and no way out. The Influx of US and Canadian Military personnel in 1945 through until 1958 spawned a whole new way of living and thinking for European Youths who saw in North Americas for the first time, Choice, personal Identity and rebellion. Starting almost 6 years earlier during the end years of the war, US Jazz music from Count Basie to Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey spawned Modernist Jazz which takes roots in Hamburg during the period of 1944 through until even today starting the Be Bop, Beatnik Jazz Movements steering completely away from traditional Jazz and Orchestral type Swing music. The US and Canadian Musicians who during the War serve in various functions from combat to medical to logistics find solace in getting together and Jamming in their spare time on the bases in England and slowly across Europe to Germany as the Germans are crushed by the Allies. These musicians form the first Modern Jazz music styles due to their personal reactions to the horrors of War and being away from loved ones etc etc. Finally moving into the 50's, Hamburg becomes home to Occupying US forces who are numbered by people who become giants in music such as Elvis Presley and more. Hamburg specifically becomes the centre of the POST WAR MODERNIST MOVEMENT where the Youth of Europe begin to see and force the change in European society that the US and Canada have enjoyed for 50 years being away from the European OLD COUNTRIES way etc. Modern Jazz groups made up of serving US military personnel and Canadian Military personnel start forming and playing the clubs on the Reeperbahn revolutionising music and Jazz meanwhile in England specifically, the youth are established by this time as having taken over the daily jobs that the men were doing until they were sent off to war. With fathers gone, the children of England find themselves driving Bus, Trams, working News Agencies, delivering milk and food, etc etc etc this inevitably starts the process of what we now call the British Mod movement. These kids who have been working since they were 10, 11, 12 in some cases, are now in their late teens and early twenties and have full time work, regular pay (for the first time in history) and as a result they have freedom and individuality and Choice in how they wish to live their lives. This soon isn't enough as England and Europe refuse to grow into the Future of the Post War World and soon by the mid to late 50's the youth are dressing in wild clothing (teddy's and tickets) and copying the fashion styles of the famous US actors appearing in the newest movies from the US like The Wild Ones etc etc this makes the youth even more frustrated with the Old Fashioned ways and Values the Royal England desperately wants to hold onto and keep the population subservient to. The Youth naturally rebels in a huge way. Enter Motorcycles and Scooters: as a result of these pseudo what we now call Rockers and Mods, the youth start clicking up into groups. Some find that their delivery jobs afforded them the use of Military Motorcycles which eventually in short order, they begin riding in their free time forming riding clubs like the US Military Motorcycle riding clubs even going so far as to wearing the same Flying Leather Jackets the US riders wore. Eventually these "pre-Mods want more than to just ride. As an answer to this, many London based youths who were working in the high echelon jobs such as MailService, Office work and the like where a higher level of dress and deportment was needed to be on the scene just starting up there of Night Clubs and such Like the Flamingo and other Jazz Clubs that were importing the Hamburg Jazz Scene sounds and American musicians And Tickets decide they want a cleaner and cheaper way of getting to work, home and the clubs in free time without having to have a Car which at that time almost no one can afford but the extremely rich. Italian Scooters offer this to the London Elite in their suits which will now be free from the noise and grease and dirt of the traditional Motorcycle and they offer a far more streamlined and elegant solution to light affordable transport for the fledgeling Mods. Bands like the Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Rory Storm etc start bring the British version of American Blues now called Ruth & Blues due to the British taking traditional Southern American acoustic un organised Porch Blues and Electrifying it and giving it straight time lie the Animals did with classics such as Boom Boom. Astrid Kercherr is almost single handedly responsible in 1962 for giving the Beatles the German Modern Look with their hair and such which they bring back to England and then the youth of England begin wearing their hair in the same way giving the Mod Hair look it's first incarnation in fact. These London highly paid independent Tickets are wearing high end hand made suits and fine Italian Leather Shoes and living on the London Night Club Scene enjoying American early Soul Acts and newly formed British Acts like George Fame etc etc. It is from these beginnings that what we now call the Mod Movement comes from. The rest is history. So British Mod is British yes but it comes from an International desire to change the way Europe keeps it's population under the thumb of the Monarchies and their scheming abusive rich elite few. One can not tell a small part of the story, the Modernist Movement is far too valuable in Human History to be thrown into "just another Sub Culture for youth like Rap, or the internet age etc. No this movement as we know, stretches far and wide from Hamburg to London to Canada to the US to Spain to even Japan and China and Russia far out weighing any significance that almost all other youth movements have to offer. IN fact it is probably the single most important and influential change in Humanity with roots in diversity, even human rights to a degree and a total change of thinking for the entire world as we know it. A nice little docs you did but it needs to be said and stressed that there is a far larger story and picture to be told that shows us just how important the Mod Scene and Culture is the Human History. It's not just some fad a few kids got into one day.
