Rod Thorn also said "I'm glad the 84' draft was before the Olympics"! If you watch the game where the 84' Olympic team played that year's NBA all-star team, they not only beat them, MJ was clearly the best player on either team! That said, Jordan came into the NBA putting the league on notice! He only needed the right teammates to complement his talent! Pippen & Grant arrived 3 years later & had they stayed intact until someone beat them in the NBA Finals they make a legit run at Russell's 8 in a row & 11 in 13 years!
@MJIZZEL

Exactly. Honestly could've been 9 in a row if Jordan hadn't retired and pippen woulda been a man in the 89 piston series but as we can clearly see now, the guy wasn't mentally tough enough and sat out game 7 with a freaking headache. LMAO. People will claim the bulls would've lost to the rockets but the bulls literally beat the teams that beat the rockets in the playoffs, the tear before Houston won and the 3 years after.

They had a legit shot. I think they could have made the transition to Rodman from Grant, and kept on winning while turning over the roster as they did. If Pippen hadn't had a migraine on the day of Game 7 of the '89-'90 ECF. If the media had not been all up in MJ's ass and two A-holes hadn't murdered his dad after title #3. If he could have convinced Phil to stay and kept the band together for the '99 season.

Hard to tell when he became the GOAT but I believe he became the best player in the league when they played the Celtics in '86. He became the league's best player long before the Bulls started winning championships as his best seasons were '87 thru '90, just prior to the championship run.

I think everyone thought he was the most talented as early as his rookie season. But he became the best in the league officially around 1988. And he became the greatest ever by most people after winning his 3rd championship in 93.

Did you watch those games like I did I’m from Boston I’m 53 Jordan blew a bunch of games vs the Celtics with missed shots and turnovers at the end of the game but Jordan gets praised for losing because it wasn’t the finals I forgot he only played 6 years
@madcapper6

@@brianharron3435 I'm 55 and yes I watched all the games between the Bulls and the Celtics. Jordan never "blew" games against them because during the early years of Jordan's career when the Celtics collectively were the much better team, the games were almost never even close, so quit trying to make stuff up. In order for him to have blown games, they first had to be close enough to where he had a chance to win. And he didn't only play 6 years, he played 15 seasons over 19 years. That's what's funny about Jordan haters, every time you try to form an argument against him it always involves bullshit and non-facts. Jordan was arguably the most clutch player in NBA history so "blowing" games wasn't his M.O. at all.

@@x-man9473 I agree, '88 was probably the year he staked his strongest argument. That was when he started getting accolades on the defensive side of the ball with his first all defensive first team award and winning DPOY, which is mainly what I think overall set him apart from the likes of Bird and Magic. He made a good case for league MVP in '87 but no defensive accolades yet (thanks mainly to Moncrief and DJ still 'D'-ing up at a high level), his offensive efficiency was down that year, shooting under 50% and it might've been Magic's best season of his career. That '87 Laker team was possibly the best over a single season in the franchise's storied history and has a strong argument as the best team of the decade along with the '86 Celtics and possibly one of the top 5 teams of all time. Magic was the floor general of that team so you gotta give it to him. He definitely deserved the award but Jordan overall wasn't very far behind. But yeah, in '88 Jordan did it all.

I've watched the NBA since I can remember in the mid 80's til now. I ain't seen a player as fundamentally sound combined with freakish athleticism and a good shooter as Jordan. If he wanted to do something, he did it and made it look fluid looking. He was on another level than the rest. Only player I've seen come close to Jordans game was Kobe Kobe lacked Jordans vertical and big hands and that led to Kobe taking much tougher shots than Jordan but skill wise, Kobe is second to me. My opinion from watching both play. Basically the eye test ya know.

I like to back up my argument for GOAT with facts, truth, and stats--not who won the most championships, or who is the flashiest dunker, who took the most shots, or the best shoe salesman. I believe GOAT means All-Time, All-Around Best Player, all aspects of the game should be considered--scoring, rebounding, assisting, stealing, and blocking, defense, and career win % (it's all about winning). When you look at the major stats for a career (pts, reb, ast, stl, and blk PER GAME), plus Overall Defensive Rating, and Career win %, and look where Bird ranks on the all-time list for those stats/metrics, add them up and the LOWER the number, the BETTER the all-around player. Bird is 20th in pts, 54th in rebounds, 47th in assists, 38th in steals, 217th in blocks, 61st in overall defensive rating, and 2nd in win %. Add those ranking's numbers up, and his number is 439--besting all the others (Jordan, Magic, Lebron, Curry, etc). In most cases, it isn't even close!! Jordan alone, because he isn't in the top 250 in rebounding, I graciously give him a 250 for that stat (though he is probably between 300-400), and he is still at 729!! Not even close! This goes to show you that most people are pretty ignorant or have trouble defining what great basketball really is. If Jordan had any pride (since he is 0-6 v Bird in the playoffs), he would come out and tell his zombies who the GOAT really is. He knows in his heart that Bird is the best to ever play. Bird beat Jordan ruthlessly 70% of the time in the regular season, and 100% of the time in the playoffs. Hell, Jordan had losing seasons his first 3 seasons, and didn't have a winning season until Pippen arrived. Bird took the 2nd worst team in the league (29-52) to a league best 61-21 his ROOKIE year and won the title his 2nd year--no Ainge, no DJ, and a rookie McHale. That is what playing winning basketball is all about. What is it about Jordan? the 6 championships came against talent he could beat--but he never won anything in the 80s--times were tough then, the first 6 years of his career. Using this metric, how does your pick for GOAT stack up?

This topic is about the GOAT so with that being said, MJ is amazing and will forever be one of the most entertaining air style and athletic artistry to score the ball and to get steals type of players, But nothing will ever change the fact that he can only dominate a game through scoring, lacks all time great versatility, cannot transcend his position or dominate his position like a Wilt Chamberlain can, does not impact winning on both ends of the floor against nearly as many hall of fame competition at once like a wilt Chamberlain has, lack winning against hall of fame comp at once in the postseason in general compared to a wilt Chamberlain, lacks the strict rules and exclusivity of packed league greatness with less teams that a wilt Chamberlain proved himself against time and again, lacks the records, stats, and rule changes made to stop his greatness and make it fair for everyone else that a Wilt Chamberlain did Man’s had so many luxuries that the flagrant foul was made just before he won his first chip, faced multiple teams in postseason whom had 0 hall of famers during his chip runs, and never even beat a team in the postseason whom had 2 or more hall of famers than his own team had etc…. Wilt Chamberlain is the goat hands down and in 2023 there’s no excuse to still be so ignorant to still follow the sheep Michael jordan narrative that’s never made sense to begin with for those of whom could actually think for themselves

Wilt averages almost 2/3rds Jordan’s amount scoring but blows him out the water shooting 8 percent higher field goal percentage, comes within 2 assits of jordan, and over quadruples jordan in rebounds and outdoes him in blocks 8x over which erases any excuse of comparing a guard to a center since jordan has the opportunity to blow wilt out the water in assists and come closer in field goal percentage, blocks, and rebounds but couldn’t even with Wilt shooting majority of his shots from fades n reverse fades n fall away no look finger rolls etc… so u have no excuse for the huge gap in stats in the finals.
