Coalition Against Pinkwashing
Pride Parade cancelled mid-route after protesters strand marchers and floats
About 20 demonstrators, calling themselves the Coalition Against Pinkwashing, held signs and chanted on Yonge Street, near Wellesley Street, at around 5:30 p.m. - a few hours after the parade’s start.
The Pride Parade was cancelled mid-route on Sunday evening after it was suddenly stopped on Yonge Street by a group of pro-Palestinian protesters.
About 20 demonstrators, calling themselves the Coalition Against Pinkwashing, began holding signs and banners, and chanting, on Yonge Street near Wellesley Street, at around 5:30 p.m. - a few hours after the parade’s start.
Floats and marchers making their way south toward the parade’s finish at Nathan Phillips Square were stranded behind the protesters, who chanted “Free Palestine” and “Pride wants a riot.”
Parade watchers began to disperse as the interruption wore on. Some of those who remained joined in with the protesters’ chants.
At 6:15 p.m., Pride Toronto posted on X that “the remainder of the parade has been cancelled. Sorry for the inconvenience. Street fair and stages are operational.”
In a statement just before 8 p.m., Anna Lee with Pride Toronto said: “Today, we made the decision to cancel the remainder of the parade out of our commitment to ensuring public safety. While we deeply respect and uphold everyone’s right to peacefully protest, our foremost priority is the well-being of all participants and spectators.
“We empathize with those who were looking forward to participating and regret any inconvenience caused by this decision,” Lee said in the statement.
The protest interrupted what had been a smooth, celebratory parade that began at 2 p.m. from Church and Bloor streets.
Toronto police gathered further down the parade route but did not take any action with the protesters who left Yonge Street at about 7:30 p.m. and marched west along Wellesley Street along the sidewalk.
Police posted on X that “officers are on the ground to facilitate the safe movement of people and vehicles/floats.”
