For anyone who wonders why Steve Johnson has that reaction at 2:06:03 when "Pumpkinhead" is mentioned, here's the thing: Johnson managed to create the backward-bent legs McTiernan wanted by using leg-extension prosthetics and having the performer (JCVD) hanging from an overhead gantry crane in order to take the weight off his actual legs. Things went sour as he details in the interview. However, after he was fired, all the stuff he had made for the film (including the creature suit) were handed to Stan Winston to see if he could make some use of it. Winston, as we all know, went in a completely different direction with "Predator" (effectively going for the "man-in-suit" approach that McTiernan so desperately wanted to steer clear of) BUT, when he made "Pumpkinhead" some time later, he gave the creature backward-bent legs and used a crane to allow the creature performer to actually stand up (I think you can actually see the wire in a few shots on some old, open-matte VHS tapes of the movie). In the second volume of "Rubberhead" (his autobiography), Johnson more or less says that Winston got the idea from his unused "Hunter" creature.

That was a wonderfully funny and inspiring interview. Loved it. I'm now really optimistic for a future film landscape filled with practical effects (even if that might not be so evident in the mainstream). Also, can't wait to buy and read Steve's book!

All 3 hours of this was so fantastic. It was like watching LOTR...you can't believe it is sooo long, yet you don't want it to end. I have the love and desire for creative problem solving and a passion for the film making process, just a shame I don't have the actual sculpting and techniques needed to be included in the business.

Yeah, he gets that a lot...seriously, even on his own channel he mentions that. He was one of the SFX companies who put forward their own proposal to work on Iron Man (happens a lot, and then the film studio chooses the one they like and go with them), shows his work on their FB page if you want to see it. How cool would it have been for RDJ and Steve to be in the same room? Would confuse the hell out of people, it needs to be said. :)
