My wife gifted me a 146 in 1989 and I didn’t even know the model number until last December when I looked on the pen cap. It was the only fountain pen I had for 34 years! The medium nib was an uncontrollable thick line for me so last month Mike Masuyama grinded it down to a 0.6 mm stub. Now it writes like a fine with line variation!! Just amazing. It still looks brand new after all these years though the clip has some light scratches.

Love that cross etching on the cap band. I'll give MB one thing, things they do well, they really do well. I think that is the best cap band out there. Same goes for the ink window. While it doesn't make much of a difference to me about an ink window, having it striated like that, keeps most of the continuity of the pen. You can always break off the other fin, and none will be the wiser. 😛 What I find hilarious is that the length of the 149 is now small compared to some of the gigantasaurs out there.

In December, I got a vintage 146. I've found I really love that pen! It writes beautifully and fits well in my hand. Of course, I do like vintage pens, so the slimmer profile may suit me because of that. The closest I've come to a 149 is Jinhao's two versions of the 159. Both versions led me to complain of being too thick. So I suspect that I wouldn't like the 149. Would be fun to try one, but I don't want to spend money on one!

Since you did say 'what is your opinion'... 😎 As a fan of the "low--end", the prices on these pens just makes me choke a little. My favorite pen, a HongDian N7 ran 30$...and I had to force my hand to push 'buy' because...30$ for a pen? 😂 I don't knock it, because everyone has a hobby. It still just sticker-shocks me when I see the prices on stuff I KNOW couldn't have cost more than a few bucks (relatively) in materials. Engineering and r&d account for a bit of it, but a LOT of these designs have been around for decades at this point. Paying for a name is just not in my nature, I guess. Heh. Good stuff and very informative, as usual!

@@jaystone4816 I don't buy that as an argument for the cost either. Well taken care of, a Jinhao x159 will outlast its owner. That pen costs 10$ or less. My N7 Rabbit is 30$. Same deal. The origin of the 'cache' of the collector's game, I hate to say it, is the same shell-game played by the DeBoer company to make diamonds "a cultural requirement" in the early 1900's. Prior to MontBlanc's purchase in 1977, they weren't a collector's anything. After the purchase, things began to change as the marketing focus 180'd away from utility to "luxury"/"collectibility". It's all good, but the prices being paid for plastic...resin pens isn't something dictated by materials or tech at this point. (The obvious exceptions are the collector artist created stuff as well as some of the more exotic rendering of the materials used. But there you're paying for art, not functionality, and most pens don't fit that category.) 🙂

Great review and comparison! Question - When you say that the MB 149 has a #9 nib, what does that mean? Does it refer to the width or length of the nib? Or is referencing the feed size/width?

The length and width change with an increase in size. The most common sizes you see are #5 and #6 nibs on pens. On those you can see the extra length and width between the #5 & #6. Same goes for the #9 on the MB149. The feeds are large to accommodate the large nibs as well.

Thanks for comparing the two. I have two 146s, one in black and the other in burgundy. The burgundy is no longer produced. Both pens are excellent writers, no hard starts or skipping. Give the devil his due, Montblanc makes a very good pen. However, the cost new for the 146 or 149 is way overpriced. The closest analog is Rolex. Rolex makes a very good watch, but they're not the best, and they are even more outrageously priced than Montblanc pens. Montblanc and Rolex have become embedded in the public consciousness as "luxury" and status icons. Neither company had that reputation initially, although both were always considered quality makers. Montblanc in the 1960s and 1970s produced a number of less expensive pens with gold nibs, especially the 14 and 24 series. Excellent gold nibs and piston fillers, and you can still purchase them on the secondary market for reasonable prices. The fact so many are available in great shape is a testament to the quality with which they were produced. Montblanc stopped production of them to concentrate on building an image as luxury and status icons. Granted, the 146 and 149 are more substantially built pens than the 14 and 24, but not enough to justify their current pricing. If you're interested in the 146 or 149, you're best advised to to seek "pre-owned" (used, in everyday language) in very good to excellent condition. Many are available at much more reasonable pricing. I've yet to own a 149, but when I do, it will be a used model in excellent condition, not a new one. As far as Rolex is concerned, even their used watches are ridiculously overpriced. There are a number of watch brands far superior to Rolex that serious watch people would rather own than Rolex. Serious advertising and promotion have made a very good watch a grossly inflated price status icon.
@cb7560

I agree with you overall. I own a number of 1970s models (such as a Noblesse, a Carrera, a 320 and a 220) made back when Montblanc made pens at all price points - much like, say Lamy do today. Montblanc went down the "luxury"route in the 1980s, once it had been acquired by Dunhill, and that is why we are where we are today. For the record, I bought a new 146 from a boutique in 2014 and I've used it a lot ever since. Was it over-priced when I bought it? In one sense yes, but given how much I've used it since, it was a good buy as I have probably saved $1000s not buying other pens! It is one of my EDC pens along with my old US made, Parker 45 from the 1970s.

@@jaystone4816 I think it’s also because, in the past, people were taught how to write properly, observing good posture and ergonomics and therefore, pens could be smaller and thinner. If you ever watch period dramas in which a fountain pen features, you can tell an actor who has taken the time to learn proper penmanship by the way the pen is held. It's a great video comparison! I don't think they are pieces of junk. On the contrary I think they have the potential to be worth their price IF they would do something more than cheap injected molded ABS plastic. And I don't think the term "Precious resin" is just an unfortunate translation. Any company this big and with that kind of budget knows how to do a good translation. It's marketing fluff because a lot of people buying a 149 or 146 are people with money and want a nice pen. They aren't necessarily pen afficionados. They just read precious resin, think it means exactly what it says. And leave it at that. My only issue with getting a MB149 (other than the price) is I think even the EF will not be fine enough. I like Pilot fine nib line width, and from what I’m hearing the EF MB is going to be too broad for my daily use.

@@adamzappia2213 ... I have to agree with everything you said about the X159. Now, owning 2 of those ( F & M), the call of the Montblanc 149 is deafening in my head. The X159 size is perfect for me. Of all the pens I have, many way more expensive than the X159, I find I use it more just because of the feel in my hand. Mine also write in reverse which I think is a plus. MB pricing though...YIKES! 😮.... But I still may pull that trigger some day.

@@jwdyss I’ve moved away from having any interest in the 149. Thankfully, since I’ve started enjoying medium nibs lately and after having tried a couple of Sailor KOP’s I’m going to go that way. I prefer cartridge/converter pens for their simplicity of maintenance so the KOP wins there for me too, and also if you like an X159 in the hand then a KOP is closer in weight than an MB 149 too. The ebonite version looks and feels incredible in the hand and I think that’s the way I’ll be going.

@@adamzappia2213 .. Thank you for reply and input. I believe you may have a really good idea there with the KOP. I couldn't agree more, converters and cartridges are much easier maintenance wise. I will be looking into the KOP myself. I too like the Japanese nib sizing better. Thanks again!

Thanks for bringing up your material creep from your feed in the 149. NOS might mean a demo pen exposed to artificial light in a showroom, but unused. 40 yrs of exposure might be the culprit. Nonetheless, with inflation, getting it replaced, still means tons of value. Can't believe how much appreciation the value went up, definitely a unicorn, like Rolex watches, unlike most vintage FPs.

And both are over hyped, though I would say MB are somewhat over hyped, while the Rolex, don't even get me started. Very good products, but there are better watches and pens. I am far less critical on MB though, but if I'm putting the 149 up against the M1000, pound for pound the M1000 wins, even with my 149 having a very sentimental place in my heart. Goes to show how great marketing can build the hype, but again I am speaking more to Rolex than MB. OMG, I think I hate Rolex. 🤣

Same here, this helped me decide on the 146. Even the writing sample looked better to me. Prefer a finer less wet line. Also nice choice on the Ferris Bueller quote.

While it isn't my absolute favorite pen, I love my 149. The added girth is really nice for my large hands. I wish that it was a broad rather than a medium, but it belonged to my grandfather so the sentimental value outweighs that minor detail. Mine is also 80's vintage with the split feed (which I think is a fantastic feed)- and oddly enough mine is missing the same fin as yours is! If I could find a loose broad nib for it I'd probably buy it without a second thought. Really appreciate the comparison between the two pens! If you haven't checked it out yet, kaweco is making a piston fill sport again. I got mine a few days ago and it is fabulous!

Great review and comparison. I thought the 146 would be the perfect size for me but I tried the 149 at a recent pen show and to me it fit my hand quite well. It is just the price that keeps me from buying one.

Try the new Jinhao x159 with resin, almost identical except for the nib of course and very cheap.

@@Javi_C I did pick up an X159. For the price, it is wonderful. I do wish it was a piston filler though.

Depends how big your hands are. Large to xtra large hands go for the big boy. Also consider the weight. I have medium hands and the 146 is perfect.
