Love this demo... easy enough to follow that I'm going to use it with my 11 year old to create and manage his budget in YNAB. ❤

Thank you for this informative and helpful video that I was able to follow along. Being using YNAB for about a year and this has helped iron out some things I've not being doing correctly and given me hope to start my new budget tomorrow. (8/1/24). Thank you!

I’ve always disliked the yellow, too, but I have a reframe now. When I was listening to Ernie talk about a category turning yellow when moving money from one category to another, it occurred to me that yellow is really just the visual of rolling with the punches. And, now it seems way more neutral…or maybe even a sign of successful YNAB-ing!

is it the case that i don’t have to go back to previous months to look for overspending because it would show up as negative “ready to assign” in the current month?

You can go back and look for overspending so you know what happened, but you don't need to correct the overspending in the previous months. Cash overspending is deducted from next month's Ready to Assign, and credit overspending becomes credit card debt that you pay off by assigning money directly to the Credit Card Payment category in the current month. ~Ernie

I will be on a cruise 5/26 - 6/6, wondering if I should fund June before or after those dates.

For peace of mind, I'd fund before (assuming you already have the money). That way you can relax on the cruise knowing all the bills happening automatically in the background back home are covered. Enjoy the cruise! ~Ernie

Why does the 'Underfunded' Option fund more money than is available? Isn't that a core principle of ynab?
@YNABofficial
5 ай бұрын
It only does this when you select the categories. If you don't select any categories and hit Underfunded, YNAB will only apply the money you have available to assign. ~Ernie

I got used to it... but sheesh... having to budget on the 1st, and not before really sucks. In short, YNAB should NOT pull money from future months to cover current month over spending.
@YNABofficial

You can still assign money in a future month-you don't have to wait until the 1st. But if you do that and need to cover overspending in the current month, make sure to move money between categories in the current month otherwise funds will be pulled from next month's RTA. ~Ernie

Can’t imagine accounts not balancing and just saying “oh well” I mean it is just math. If things don’t balance some item(s) have not been accounted for in YNAB. I think it is better to find the problem than ignore it. If you want to take the “oh well” approach what is the point of keeping up with finances? Just pay whatever the bank says you owe.

You can say "oh well" only if you make a reconciliation balance adjustment-otherwise, like you said, you are ignoring the problem! ~Ernie

@oldmaninthemirror I totally agree with you. If I am $25 off on my credit card balance I have made a mistake somewhere. My career was as a bookkeeper which probably accounts for the level of detail I keep in YNAB. (I also have everything in Quicken which I have been using for over 20 years.) When I was keeping the books manually for one of the companies I worked for we had to balance to the penny. Sometimes the mistake would be the net of some number, sometimes it would be a transposition. Occasionally I would spend hours trying to find the error. I am still OCD about this. When I reconcile in YNAB I have my credit card website open and make sure everything on that website is what is reflected in YNAB. “Oh well” gives me nightmares. 😊

There is no peace of mind until that $25 discrepancy is found. Also, for the purpose of the demo, it would be less confusing if the over spent Electric bill from checking was a different amount than $25. I kept associating the red RTA with that missing VISA transaction, but it was the overspent electric bill. That said, even as a veteran YNABer, I gained some new perspective.

We probably won't make a video about budgeting biweekly because (and this is the great thing about YNAB) it works with any pay cycle! The question is always the same-What does this money need to do before more money arrives? Hope that helps. ~Ernie
