I've found for the most part people aren't interested in building a relationship with wildlife. In my experience, nature has no clock. It takes a looot of time and patience, and especially trust and respect. It has to be on their terms, period. At least that's been my experience. I'm constantly learning. It's sooo worth it! Thank you for sharing.

socialised and appreciate the food and scratch giver...but never assume that the friendship of a wolf is unbreakable...wolves primary function is to spot weakness and going in with wolves you know, while ill or injured is a no no because they can and do attack their own handlers.

A lot of people seem to think James just shows up in the enclosure and the wolves automatically love him, but it's so much more than that. Random visitors are not going to get this treatment. I wouldn't approach those wolves without James to tell me what to do and put Nahkato and Waffles at ease (or any other animal at a zoo). Trust and familial bond is something that you get because you've been with them all their life, and that's why the bond between him and the animals is so strong, because he is family.

Man, every time I hear you mention "Nahkato And Waffles", I keep thinking you're talking about the plate of 2-3 grilled maple sausage cakes and waffles you had for breakfast right before, not the two wolves in this video. But even still, that's a good thing to keep in perspective with this. As much as I love wolves, there's a difference between enjoying them from the comfort of KZitem or seeing them at a zoo/wildlife preserve, and working with them on a consistent basis.

That is a really interesting and important distinction you made there between dogs learning commands but wolves don't work like that because their central impulses are about family, or pack, on an equal footing. I like that a lot. Seems to me that people who have wolfdog hybrids can probably expect some difficulties in training them as just 'big dogs' ?

Nothing but respect for these beautiful animals. I would never approach any of them in the wild as if they were anything like a domesticated dog. I always cringe when I see people do it, but since you raised them in captivity, it is easier to watch and respect. They depend on you for everything, almost like a dog and may not be able to return to the wild.

I have made comments on his posts that I used to have a husky wolf mix. She lived to almost 16 years old. I completely agree with what he is saying. Even though Tundra was a mix, we didn't, and couldn't train her like our dogs. She was of her own mind, and our relationship was completely built on trust.

Having raised enough animals in my own life I can say this first and foremost. Are there dynamics here that you would not necessarily deal with while raising a domesticated animal like a family dog, versus helping to take care of wild animals like wolves? Yes. But ultimately what it comes down to is the simple answer of Trust. These animals trust this man because he has shown them nothing but love, AND the proper respect owed to wild animals and their individual needs. Every animal is different and requires different means of handling sure. But at the end of the day THAT is the major difference to what this fine gentleman, and others like him, is able to do here versus what all of the "experts" on here shout from the comment section. He knows what he is doing. Lets give him some grace here and acknowledge that.

Dogs have been selectively bred to give up their independence. It's called neoteny, which means they retain their puppy-like characteristics and obey the "parent". While dogs and puppies will follow directions, will follow a point, for example, the wild canids will not. Wild canids, wolves, never give up their independent authority. They will always judge and decide for themselves. This rescuer-care giver gets along with these wolves because he is very perceptive of and is able to mimic their signals, and has built a relationship based on trust. Always aware and accepting of the risks presented by their wildness, he relates to them on their terms. My hat's off to this young man.

It seriously peeves me how many people think Liondad can do this cause they think these animals are ‘domesticated’ no their not, their still wild animals deep down an deserve respect. You see thats the word ‘Respect’ he’s earned their respect and vice versa. Liondad respects their wild animals and doesn’t treat them like pets. I tip my virtual hat to you Liondad, please give your animals a head scratch for me.

That are wolves make no mistake of that. James is one of one of them, he is their family. He’s build a relationship over a long long time, for generations and that trust, the bond is aligned with their natural wild nature. He raised them, takes care of them, respects their nature therefore he is able to be with them in this manner. 🎉 and we’re lucky he educates the public about them.

What was the most complicated/ difficult to grasp or deal with wolf behaviours to incorporate, mimic or even understand? I feel like I'd seriously struggle with the the whole social construct of being in a pact, especially being deferential to a non human. Oof that would be tough to take a seak at the back.

You can do this only by being a parent and through mutual respect. With wolves - not domesticated animals. We have no choice but to train our dogs - for safety, if not additional reasons - but we can take example from what you do with your wolves. I don't like being a "master", I'd rather be a parent as well, and a trusted friend.
