Director of Louisiana Division of Archaeology, Dr. Charles “Chip” McGimsey, presents fascinating history of the Morgan Mounds during the Vermilion Historic Society January Meeting 2023 at the Vermilion Parish Public Library. He discusses what’s known to archaeologists about the origin of the mounds and the Native Americans who built it around 700 to 1000 CE on Pecan Island. Also discussed is the excavations of the Morgan Mounds first in 1926 and then again in 1986, including details on artifacts including the “Morgan Effigy”.
