My morning routine. Trying to get three tired kids to school and kindergarten in time by waking them, making them breakfast and rushing them to their bikes to leave home in time. Meanwhile throwing a coffee in my face to wake up myself and eating the leftovers from the kids. Then packing my backpack in a panicky hurry forgetting half of what I need at work or on my bike ride. Finally I hop on my bike and commute 26km to work of which the first 2/3 are blissful gravel terrain and the last 1/3 are a suicidal ride through Berlin traffic, spending half of this time waiting at red traffic lights and the other half racing eBikes to the next traffic light. #chillstuff

Cool! I prep everything but breakfast and water the night before...bike is cleaned and lubed, tire pressure, bags packed, water bottles in fridge or freezer depending on temps, snacks, helmet, gloves, clothes all laid out and clean my glasses. Make my smoothie in my Vitamix the day before (64 oz) and drink half/save half. Ride day: get up, wash, drink smoothie, clear email, bathroom, sunscreen, dress, load water, start my Suunto/Strava/Garmin and head out.

I made my Polar stem mount lighter by: 1) drilling a big hole in the back plate 2) cutting off the side wings 3) removing the chunky rubber pad at the back and replacing it with a peace of cut inner tube. 4) using very small cable ties to fit it to the stem. Because the rubber/latex bands are actually quite heavy. The cable ties show zero grams on the scale. 😁 I can't remember how many grams I saved 10-15? But it was significant.

Morning routine: drink two or three glasses of water, eat an apple, enjoy a cup of instant coffee, visit to the bathroom + shower, fit heart band and dress, bake & eat oatmeal/banana pancakes, put pressure in tyres, fill bidons, smear sun screen if needed, don helmet/gloves/glasses, pack rear pockets & go. Carry no multitool (why?), mount no saddle bag (ugly). Left pocket: spare tyre and 2 levers in rubber glove, mini-pump, rain jacket (only if needed). Middle pocket: phone and cards holder, doorkey. Right pocket: banana, gel and energy bar. If necessary, unused legs & arms can be stowed under the bib.

The new 530 is suppose to have a lot better than the 520, I don’t run any sensors, no bt, no backlight but as soon as I have a route loaded it drains the battery like crazy. You're packing half your household in that small saddle bag! - Jest aside, a must is: Driver's licence (smaller than the ID card), medical insurance card, “Notfallkarte” with contacts (including my MD) in case of emergencies, so the poor fella at the hospital doesn't have to do research (I've served as paramedic); organ donor card (“note: good riddance!”). Instead of coffee (which some say leads to more liquids lost, but I found studies showing it were untrue) I get some Muckefuck and add lots of sugar. The former is a coffee substitute. Bike is packed the night before, with a large saddle bag because I cannot stand full pockets and the items get wet and sweaty. But: Jeder Jeck es anders!

Mark Achternaam Start times will vary from ride to ride. But even so, - I’m not a morning person (lately my rides has started 5pm hehe) - I need my 8h of shuteye - I live close to the mountains, but my riding mates have about a 1,5h ride up to me so will take that into account before deciding start times.
