@@FabioGnecco kinda, but I was used to it xD back then many games got banned in germany. nowadays that stuff doesn't happen anymore but bsck then it was pretty normal if you were a hardcore gamer to buy illegal stuff lol I had 3 copies of Manhunt (1 each on PS2, Xbox and PC) and that game was banned and still is (the publisher would need to manually try to get it off the index, or wait 25 years I think for it to automatically be de-listed) it's not like it was too hard to come by tho, if you knew where to look you'd find games like Manhunt, Postal 2 etc. easly
@kevboard

@Super Sharp Shooter yeah shit like that was weird... even weirder, I kinda miss those times xD I am weirdly nostalgic for it. back then it was kind of a Core Gamer badge if you had imported uncensored versions and banned or "indizierte" games in your library. you'd be like "yo I got the PEGI version of San Andreas! wanna come over?" to your friends these days basically no games get censored or indexed anymore tho, and I know that's a good thing, but yeah... that weird nostalgia for hunting down certain games, looking in small nerd stores for Manhunt or uncensored GTA San Andreas and stuff like that, it's still there for me 🤣

MAN the Jakk's Pacific Plug N' Plays were better than they had any right to be! The Plug N' Plays they have out now are all just single NES games on a chip and cost the same amount. We DO have cheap mini-arcade machines now but most of those are NES on a Chip with only a few utterly fascinating exceptions (namely the Tiny Arcades which have custom ultra low-res versions of the games which vary wildly in quality). Thanks for covering this as I had no idea the amount of work that went into this and Digital Eclipse just gained some respect points from me (CRIPES they have been around for a LONG time).

A friend and I each had one of these when we were kids. Multiplayer was a pretty simple host/client config. One would be plugged into the TV and would handle actually running the game. The 2nd would just be plugged into the host with a 3.5mm aux cable. The client wouldn't actually play the game and if you were to plug it into a TV it would just show text on screen telling you to plug the other one in or switch it around so it was the host. While one was playing the game, the 2nd one would just send button inputs to the host via the aux cable.

I've been working on a hack of UMK3 called UMK3 Plus, which is 100% arcade hardware compatible... and even then I've at least had the code disassembly and some tools to help make sense of it and make changes - I couldn't imaging going line by line in a game's code to reverse engineer the entire thing ground up. Props to that guy, and great video!

Hey, I remember programming the Sunplus 220, 240, and 280. Every model below the Sunplus 280 used the Sunplus ISA assembly. At the time I programmed TMNT Way of the Warrior (watch Rerez’s video to see it torn apart) the gcc compiler couldn’t output optimized code, so I wrote the sound driver in assembly. The rest ran fast enough. Honestly all their tools were kind’a crappy so I had to do everything from scratch, kernel and tools. ROMs can be 2, 4, or, 8 MB as I recall but the bus was strictly 16-bit words, there were no 8-bit bytes types. Memory was something like 16 kilo words, I think. I’d have to go look it up to confirm. It was fun but sometimes frustrating to program.

Do you even remember how many hardware sprites and sound channels were on them? The SPG288 has 64 sprites and 7 channels (6 hardware PCM/ADPCM + 1 software DAC/FIFO channel), MAME emulates 256 sprites and 17 channels for full-blown 16-bit SPG models.

As a side note, an interesting quirk of the SNES/Mega Drive era was the SNES could do colors and sound better than the Mega Drive, but the Mega Drive had higher resolution AND could support larger sprites with more frames because less colors required less memory.

I am not a coder/programmer etc. but my opinion is that modern game developers get spoiled by ultra powerful hardware platforms. More detailed multy K graphics are awesome but it would be nice if most of the games had their clones/ports on cheaper platforms so keen coders would invent really great optimisation algorithms that later could be applied back on latest hardware. The need of such "optimizers" will occur someday when physical and quantum limits of hardware production is reached. I think it is the right approach for every aspect of life and optimization will lead to whole new branch in science field! Nice channel! Thumbs up!
