Navratri, meaning 'nine nights', is one of the most popular and widely celebrated Hindu festivals in many parts of India. Gujarat, however, is the only state that erupts into a nine-night dance festival, perhaps the longest in the world. Each night, all over the state, villages and cities alike, people gather in open spaces to celebrate feminine divinity, referred to as Shakti.
The dance form known as ras garba (also joined sometimes by dandiya, which uses small wooden sticks), comes from Lord Krishna's worship rather than Goddess worship, from the Gop culture of Saurashtra and Kutch. Stories of relationships between Krishna and the Gopis, and their emotions, also often make their way into the ras garba music. Vadodara is considered the cultural capital of Gujarat, and the most sought after location for celebrating Navratri.
Faculty of Fine Arts was founded in June 1950, located in the heart of Vadodara, Gujarat. The Faculty has produced world-renowned artists in the course of seven decades of its conception. It has a history of outstanding faculties many of whom are recipients of Padma-Bhusan and Padma Shree Awards apart from being awarded numerous State, National, International Awards and Fellowships.
The garba of the cultural capital of the state is famous across the country. People from various parts of the country and abroad specially visit Vadodara during the Navratri to see and enjoy the festival. Out of hundreds of garba grounds, the ethnic garba organised at the fine arts ground of the MSU has always been a major attraction for the garba fans.
The student of fine arts organise the garba and they participate in it. A variety of steps in playing garba is the USP of fine arts ground garba, and here the rhythm players themselves sing garbas even while playing instruments. This rare style of singing garba is a tradition at this ground for the last three decades Majority of the rhythm players are alumni of the faculty, who specially come to play instruments and sing garbas during the nine-day festival.
