you right..the problem with vet's is that most of their knowledge concerning herpetology is basic general knowledge unless u find a vet who specializes in reptiles or at bare min is either a hobbyist themselves or has experience with reptiles but again their knowledge tends to be on the medical side not husbandry and specific care. lessons learned, ask your vet questions...be specific as to why your attending, but would u call a vet prior to buying a a lizard..no...when it comes to any pet..do your research from multiple sources, forms, youtube, books, care guilds...etc i tend to always do my research and when it comes to cages i tend to make them run like it would in their natural environment..rainy and cold seasons, light sequences, ensuring full spectrum lighting etc. but before u buy do your research, ask questions, and know what your getting into. good advice

@@wigglyworm6645 Yes it is, but there is a severe lack of true "exotics" vets. Some will say they have exotic experience but might've had almost no formal training with them. Most veterinary medicine students focus on small or large animal clinical practice, which has almost no instruction on exotics. It's a completely separate field of study than wildlife & exotics/zoo veterinary medicine with minimal overlap. Thus most "exotics" vets who do not have a dedicated exotic-only practice are not really qualified to treat most species.

Im suspicious of neglect too in the case of the ant-eaten gecko - they said they took a 2-day trip and it was stripped clean? I don't buy it. I live near some pretty vicious species of ants and have watched them swarm a much smaller creature (already dead, nothing I could do) and still take longer for it to be entirely stripped from start to finish...it's fishy and strange that the entire enclosure is also empty save for the carcass. Idk it dont add up.

It depends on the type of ant, how many there are, and the size of the animal being attacked. If it was any type of any that produces a sting/ bite that hurts you then they can kill small animals if there are enough ants. It also depends on how aggressive the ant species is as well. Unfortunately vets (yes, even exotic vets) are busy enough keeping up with the advances of their job (health of the animals) that they don’t have the time to also keep up with the best husbandry practices of every animal which is why they’ll often have outdated care guides promoting things like 10g enclosures, sand/calcium sand, coloured bulbs, heat mats only…
@critterc0rner

What I did was I put automatic water dispenser in his cage and then the night before we left I gave him a BUNCH of crickets to fatten him up and gave him a lot the day of too. The whole trip I was worrying about him because he was my first ever pet and I love him very much. When we got back he was thankfully fine. He did loose some weight while I was gone so I had to fatten him up again over the course of a few weeks feeding him every day. So, in conclusion I don’t recommend it but Leopard geckos can survive for more than three days if your going away. If you do have the option of having someone look after them I’d say that is a better option. Thankfully it’s been two months since I got back and he is super healthy again and gained the weight he needed.

While the editor was technically not incorrect, Alex was much closer to the correct word; anthropomorphize: attribute human characteristics or behavior to (a god, animal, or object). Personify is much more commonly used with reference to inanimate objects, where anthropomorphize generally refers to humanizing animals. Pronunciation is “anthro-po-morph-ize.” Good try tho editor lol

It depends on the size of the gecko. A ten gallon may be fine for a smaller gecko, but if they get large like my girl unexpectedly did, then 20 gallon long or anything with enough floor space for hides and space for thermoregulation is good. As long as the gecko is content, feels safe and is not doing things that show that it is unhappy with its environment like trying to escape. Of course more room is nearly always better as long as you provide enough coverage to make sure your gecko doesn't feel to exposed. When your gecko feels safe enough to sploot out in the open when there are other options, then you should be good.
@catalayacoveexotics

I feel like people just want to slap the word outdated on simple things sometimes just to say other people are wrong. ofc more room is better, but the reason a “minimum” is a “minimum” is because it is still just as effective as any other setup. social media has taught me to almost never show my tanks setups because someone will always have something bad to say, even if my geckos are healthy, have proper heating/lighting, and are seemingly happy and carefree. some people just want a reason to argue, even if there’s no animal being harmed. Lol sorry for the rant, I just had to say it.

@@neonice I wasn’t saying it was a good thing or should happen, I like to keep mine in 20-40s depending on the adult size of the gecko. Notice how I was talking about the MINIMUM which is a 20. I was just trying to make a point that nobody will ever be able to agree 100% and there’s always someone with a different opinion, and as of late people have been sharing their opinions in a not so nice manner. Hope this helps, and I don’t feel that people who keep in 10s are bad owners, but maybe need a little more help and understanding. Keep in mind there’s a lot of false care info EVERYWHERE. I like to not judge before knowing the full story :)

@@catalayacoveexotics I agree with you. Some people think keeping reptiles in a minimum required size enclosure is equal to abuse. It's like people cannot get their head around the fact not everyone can afford a 80+ gallon species-specific bioactive enclosure for their small to mid sized reptiles.

@@imugi-16 not to mention, the same people who think minimum is abuse also don’t take into account most breeders keep the geckos in rack systems or 20 gallon terrariums forever. meaning when they buy a gecko from almost anyone, they’re supporting what they consider “abuse”, But they don’t want to have that conversation.

You are 100% right when you say people anthropomorphize animals. It actually leads to worse care for the animals because they are not human. My cat doesn't meow much because I don't respond to his meowing at home. I don't talk to him, feed him, etc when he's meowing. He has not trained me to do something when he asks. The cat is perfectly happy- exercised, fed well, goes on walks, is very affectionate. But when I go to the vet or people meet him, there's always a comment that he's "very quiet" or "doesn't talk much" with the assumption something is wrong with the cat or I've punished him for meowing. I have also told guests not to try to play with the cat using their hands... He is trained to not consider human appendages toys. But some of my friends are like "awww but I want to play with your cat!" But they don't want to play in a way the cat will understand... Because they don't understand cats... TL;DR I agree and no cats don't need to be loud or human hand aggressive.

With the not trusting vet thing. I studied animal care (translation says zookeeper but i learned only about farm animals, dogs, cats and horses but my school taught about rodents and reptiles also ) and my school had an aggressive leopard gecko. He lived in a class tank (don't know how big) with few chunks of wood as hiding spots and humid box which worked as a hide too and the bedding was just paper towels. The gecko would leave the humid box only to eat and would lunge out of the box and attack when cleaning his tank and one "reptile expert" who was visiting my school told them to put proper bedding in which fixed the aggression and the gecko was seen little more often after that. It was wild to me that the gecko was kept on paper towels when all 3 snakes, 4 other lizards, tortoise, fish and frogs had proper tanks as the coal was to have as "natural" enclosures as you can in a tank. Like yes leopard gecko could be on paper towels but the school didn't even know you can but bedding in.

But is that really gonna make them change? ask yourself, if you were doing something you didn't think was wrong, and then some smug guy wrote a paragraph about how evil you are, called you stupid, and said you shouldn't own pets. Would you, genuinly, be inclined to listen to him? Most people would not. Convincing people to do the right thing for their pet is more important than your ability to be smug, and your internet justice boner.

I'm glad you're good with 20 longs for leopard geckos. I looked at 40s...and they just seemed so massive....for my gecko who literally sleeps 16-18 hours per day (if we don't get him out), and sits in 2 spots. Lol. A 20 is big enough for the 3 hides and a water dish...plus all the decorations. A 40 would be ideal if I were going to create an entire backdrop with tunnels and cages, and have different hides in it...but, I'm not. Lol. I did initially start out with 10 g bc that was what I found when researching it. But moved them up pretty quickly. I migjt eventually get my more active gecko a larger one...like a 30g? But I've had no issues with 20...and not everyone has a massive reptile room that can hold several 40 g tanks. If I only had one or 2 geckos....maybe I'd do 40...I dunno. Like I said, 20 works well...

In can run for miles around the tank comfortably without getting stuck at a corner or have it barely able to run around 3. The cage should be 2-5x larger or more then the animal itself 4. It should be able to fit multiple human heads in it otherwise it's not big enough 5. The cage should be larger then a 10 gallon tank with no top opening 6. It should have hides and all needs taken care of in said tank

The veterinarian thing is so controversial. It really depends what they’re specialized in. There are SO many veterinarians that don’t know a single thing about exotics. I work in a school veterinary clinic that’s also 24 hour emergency & specialty. I work as an animal handler in the exotics department, with a technician and veterinarians that are specialized in exotics. The rest of the hospital is not permitted to touch the wildlife at all, and they see exotics overnight but usually call the on call exotics doctor for advise or make them wait for the next day, cause again, they know next to nothing about exotics

My leopard gecko is probably just trying to escape but at least once a day he climbs to the top of his enclosure and nudges the lid like he wants to get out. So I made a sort of ramp for him that goes from the top of his cage down to the desk and I let him crawl around for a while then put him back. It's one of those corner desks that's built into the wall so it's pretty big. He sometimes just hides behind my computer or under the ramp but most of the time he's exploring and climbing on things like my keyboard (or the curtains...). He's very busy when he's not sleeping or eating. He doesn't seem to be in a hurry, just kinda saunters around, climbing and licking things. Idk if that's normal for a leo.
