I live in South Florida, 2 hours south East of Orlando and I remember that Disney lagoon story VERY very well. All of us Floridians know the story well. As Floridians, the mere statement “the child was NEAR the lagoon” makes us cringe. When we hear “the child was in ankle deep water” it makes our hearts DROP!!!! This is a horrendous and tragic story. Rule of thumb for us Floridians… “every body of water has a gator in it.”

I'm from Florida about an hour and a half west of Disney. This was such a tragedy and it was so preventable! There are over 1.4 million alligators in the wild in the state of Florida - they aren't behind glass or in zoos, they are in the wild. Why couldn't Disney have posted some common sense rules - at the very least that there are gators in the water? You should assume every body of water in Florida contains gators.

I’d still prefer alligators over crocodiles any day. Alligators are very reserved, shy creatures who don’t like to be bothered (especially by humans) and will only attack if there is a nest nearby or they haven’t eaten in days/weeks. Whereas crocodiles will kill you but not eat you, set a trap with your rotting carcass and eat the poor animal that falls for its trap. Terrifying stuff.

@@emo7636alligators are very tricky to contain and keep out of bodies of water. They can climb fences and dig holes. Some have been found in pools and in people’s houses. Think of alligators in Florida as squirrels in trees. They find ways to get from one body of water to another by any means necessary. I always check the pool in my neighborhood before jumping in. Just because something is manmade doesn’t mean an animal can’t get to it or find a way. Unpopular opinion but the truth whether you want to hear it or not. The death of that two-year-old child at the Disneyland resort is a result of the parents. When I hear the state's Florida or Louisiana. The first thing that pops in my head is alligators. All bodies of water are off-limits including swimming pools. And that is my frame of mine as me being an adult. If my children decide they want to build sandcastles I have a 40 count of 16 oz of bottle of water in my trunk. You can build sandcastles 45 yds away from that water. I'm only preparing for the dangers that I know that lies ahead. If my two-year-old decided to throw a temper tantrum, so be it. You should never hate on the wild animals who take human life because your techniquelly in their territory. I feel like Disney made a huge mistake creating a lagoon on their property that connects to another lake. They knew this park was mostly for children and many tourists aren’t fully aware of the dangers or Florida water. Removing 220 alligators from their man made lake after this incident is just devastating. They should have known the risk of having an open beach on this water with children. Definitely should have had better signage that told tourists it was alligator infested. Yes Florida is home to many many different species of wildlife but not every tourist really knows the risks

Yes, they are totally at fault! They know damn well that any body of water is going to attract alligators, and no, it doesn’t have to be connected by a river or something they will walk through the woods across the roads and go a couple miles to find a new piece of water that they can make their own. And Disney knew that, they knew that before they even built one piece of those parks, and yet they still let people think it’s safe. That’s crazy.

Visiting Florida, I was told that if you can't step across it or see the bottom, there's an alligator in it. Don't assume that the pretty little retention pond behind the flowering trees at the edge of the Walmart parking lot is a safe place to walk the dog.

Alligators DO NOT RARELY come out of the water to get food! Why don’t you go fish next to a canal, and see one come out every single time that you pull a fish out, or go fishing with your three year old son like I did, and at the last second, I noticed that an alligator creeped up underwater inches from shore, ready to grab him. Right when I saw him, I threw my fishing pole at him and picked my son up by his chest skin and got him out of the way! hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats have gone missing next to a canals edge, even when they’re on a leash, and being walked by a human. I’m telling you this because you’re spreading disinformation and making it sound like you could go sit next to a canal, and nothing is going to happen to you. If you sit next to a canal within 15 minutes, there will be an alligator in front of you, it doesn’t matter what size, it just matters that there will be one in front of you. Please do my homework before you put people in harms way. That’s a bad video to have up.

I went on an air boat tour of the Florida Everglades. The guide told us how they can jump out of the water or off of rocks and into the boat. Thankfully, we only saw little ones and only one (the smallest we had seen) attempted to jump in from a rock, but he changed his mind and just slipped into the water. We also did a tour of the Kennedy Space Center and in the water filled ditches outside the fences, we saw the biggest alligators (probably about 3 to 4 feet compared to the 2 to 3 foot ones we saw in the Everglades). My stepdad bought my mom an alligator head at the Everglades and that thing was WICKED!

I have lived only a few thousand feet from Taylor Park/Lake (where this tragedy took place) for well over two decades. We don’t have basements in Pinellas County Florida (along the coastal beach front county that surrounds Tampa Bay). I don’t know why the story says he lived in a friend’s basement, but that simply isn’t possible since a basement here would be called an indoor swimming pool. Digging even just 1-2 feet will result in a hole with standing water. I’m not sure why they mention him living in a basement, but that is just ridiculous on the coast of this beach filled Central Florida community! The story was completely accurate other than that one fact. Shawn was known to retrieve frisbees from Taylor Lake to make extra money because of the extremely popular disc golf course located in the park right next to the shallow “alligator filled”park! The cost of many of the fancy frisbees that players use for the game of “disc golf” (or frisbee golf for the older generation) can be quite high, so there is good money to be made there because that lake is FILLED with gators and it is forbidden to swim or enter the water at that location. As a result, someone who was willing to break the posted rules to retrieve the discs could easily make $5-$10 for the newer ones from any used sporting goods store. What happened to Shawn that day was a terrible tragedy. Hopefully it is a lesson to anyone thinking of breaking posted rules that forbid entering Lake Taylor and other similar “gator filled” lakes and brackish waterways. Normally the alligators are afraid of humans, however, tourists often break the posted rules and feed alligators which causes them to lose their natural fear of human beings. It’s so dangerous once they lose that fear that state wildlife services are sadly forced to remove and put down any alligators which have been seen being fed, or which have visibly lost their natural fear of humans. It’s terrible that the state must do this, but sadly it is the only way to prevent more injuries and/or deaths of unknowing humans when the gators became fearless & aggressive as they inevitably do when that natural fear is lost! 🐊😳🔥🎯 💯😔🤷♂️

Not at all. I believe it's called psychological profiling. News and interviews with the friend, who knows the man, helps to understand what the man was feeling and going through. The discs on the shore help to know exactly what he was doing. No marks in the ground from dragging show that he went out so far. No discs in the shallow water near the discs on the shore show that he went further into the water. Crocodiles are hunters. If there are many of them in an area, especially during mating season or being territorial, hunters tend to surround the prey. What was going through his mind upon seeing this and knowing he was going to die is simple, as they are basic things. You hear a noise or two, you see the eyes. You know you're boned so you try screaming for help, hoping that someone is nearby. The rest is history.

Yeh, I camped in the Northern Territory one time. Woke up to find saltwater croc tracks coming up out of the river and circling around the tent. Maybe a 13 or 14 foot croc. No more camping by the river in the N.T.
