I found this excellent: the grip is a part I still work on after 50 years: we had zero coaching back in the late 60s. I have found for example you cannot have a controlled easy follow thru with a faulty grip_ in my mind the grip when correct allows the cue on line and thru the cueball, any tightening excessive looseness or grab during the shot will pull the cue off line. The grip is very closely alloyed to pressure on each shot and will vary with fluctuating mindsets. This can be helped by initially striking more into the center of the cueball which simply reduces pressure on the shot. As confidence then dictates- the beginner can then by small degrees begin adding side and spin with increasing confidence. You are the champ coach Steve< I watch all your stuff here in Australia.

Another brilliant video Steve. What I love about this video is that you mentioned in detail all the don'ts along with the situations in which they may occur. I just realised that I subconsciously have a tendency of leaving that gap between the cue stick and the palm of my hand and twisting the wrist whilst potting the black at an angle. Thanks for pointing it out. As always, Love from India.

When I have time off the twist at the end is my first cock up to correct. Normally find the issue at the end of the session like always. Great content, covers all the issues a grip can have.

Another excellent video! I start recording myself recently. What I discover about my grip especially with power shots is that i'm holding the cue so tight and squeezing at the same time as Steve described here. I should be more relaxed and focused on my pause and controlled and relaxed delivery. Thanks again Steve. You're amazing! 💯

Great video again Steve. Only wish i knew this information about the grip 30+ yrs ago. Especially the squeeze on impact ( or not to squeeze on impact specifically) its quite a difficult habit to break especially when using power. Thats why its essential i believe that any young budding snooker players get quality coaching as soon as possible to address bad habits before they take hold 👍

Yes, I think it's very hard to avoid the 'squeeze' problem on (near) maximum power shots... Especially so when there's pressure on the shot too!

This is compelling for me to use the analogy of when people are in the gym for example and lifting weights. Some are fixated to think of going for the heaviest and 'rushing' for repetitions in presume of gaining instant results. That's what I perceive with those overly gripping the cue. It's all about control and the range of movement.

As you know Steve i was dangling the cue in my fingers which was definitely effecting my ability to screw the white. I went straight into my club after our session and this small adjustment plus my distance away from the shot is quickly turning me into a potting machine 😏😎

Funny, because I never really paid attention to my grip. I know I don't twist, nor do I place my thumb on top of the cue, but I don't think I relax my fingers at the back when I'm drawing the cue back.

I had an issue that my wrist was starting off twisted rather than twisting when I strike. I put it down to the grain of the wood of my cue in that I would grip the cue in a certain way (i.e. with the flat part of the butt pointing upwards) but when getting down on the shot the chevrons on the cue didnt quite line up and I was subconsciously turning my wrist to line them up rather than changing the grip on the cue. I think I have sorted it now though.

I recently changed my grip to be much looser, I imagine as if I'm "throwing" the cue forward, my cue action improved maybe 20-30% but I wonder if this is the correct way of cueing.

As always Steve ;) you put a video up of exactly the thing I am concentrating on it this very time. I spoke with my coach just on Monday and he pointed out that I have a problem similar to #2 on your list (holding too loose) but in my case it was opening the hand too much, letting the 3 fingers go off the cue. So I will be correcting that now. Thanks for all the videos and keep them coming! My request if I may would be on psychology - how to keep the level of play against weaker opponents. Something I noticed I am struggling with. I play much better when facing a stronger opponent.

I'm a squeezer sometimes, but only if I go low on the shots and want to generate a lot of backspin. I do it subconsciously, because of fear of miscueing on powerful draw shots. Oddly enough on top spin shots I almost never do this
