One thing that a lot of people also miss when discussing the "mew under truck" thing is the fact that the truck is a unique asset of not one, but four sprites. Sprite limit was so limited back then that you had to mirror, recolor and reuse a lot of sprites purely to make a game fit on the tiny cartridge. This means that if that truck truly had nothing on it, that would be some valuable data being wasted on absolutely nothing which is unheard of in any other part of the game. That's a huge part of what made mew under the truck so compelling, and back then we didn't know that gamefreak was actually made up of bad coders, so them putting in useless data that actually did nothing didn't seem like the kind of thing they'd do

2:17:00 the "left facing Swastika" has its own name to distinguish itself, its called the "Manji" and its a prominent part of japanese culture as its often used to depict the afterlife such as cementeries and Budhist Temples, it is also featured in the Pokemon TCG in japan in the Trainer card "Koga's Secret Technique of Transformation" the card however was never released in the west and another prominent feature of the manji in popular media is the anime "Tokyo Revengers" about a young man sent back into his teen years to find a way to infiltrate the top spots of a delinquent gang so he can prevent them from murdering his love interest in the present, the gang's name is "Tôkyo Manji" or "TôMan" for short.

2:01:45 I would like to state that in this case the people who wear sombreros and ponchos IRL (Mexicans like yours truly) never claimed cultural appropriation of any sort for this, most of us were in fact quite happy with this representation as it was done in a very tasteful and friendly way and some of us even went out of our way to show this costume and the guitar playing clip to friends and family. The outrage was caused by twitter users (big surprise I know) who claimed this was "cultural appropriation" giving us another great moment of white people crying foul when it was none of their business when it comes to topics they should just keep the frik away from such as cultural appropriation that isnt their own and racism when its in any way you look at it, cute, fun and quirky and with not s single ounce of malice in it.

@JimMilton-ej6zi
9 ай бұрын
You're right, that if white people see something that another race might be offended about they should let that culture speak up about it, but a lot of "mexican americans" also talked badly about it, the second generation mexicans who lived in america all their lives, never spoke a word of spanish and engross themselves in a white american culture while still claiming to have mexican roots even though they're not mexican, they're only american at that point, those people also cried and complained about it while no one else seemed to have any problem with it. Idk what it is with second generation immigrants to america and having "being offended at things and being racist against white people" as one of their core personality traits, but it's gotten old very fast.

@@JimMilton-ej6zi I'm sorry but just because you and possibly your parents aren't born in the country your family is from, doesn't mean you lose your ethnicity. I have lots of friends who are 2nd and third generation Aussies who only speak English and they still get asked where they're really from. Migrant parents don't suddenly give birth to a british child just because they're in Australia. I'm pretty pale for a Greek unless I go outside and even I've had a patient refuse care from me because she only wants a white nurse who can speak English without a foreign accent and understand her. You want to know what my accent is? Very Australian with a hint of Afrikaans as my parents grew up in south africa. I was also very tan as I actually made the long trek to the beach that summer. But no I'm basically Australian and have no right to say I'm Greek. And maybe it's different in America, I wouldn't know, but here in Australia, I don't know anyone who goes SJW mode against white people even though they're grandparents left their home country at a young age

Linkle is not a female version of Link, she's an obsessed fangirl that wants to look like him. She is also not canon and not a Nintendo creation. Hyrule Warriors was made by KT, the same people who make all the Warriors games. Nintendo had nothing to do with the design or development of any of its characters. Also, she wasn't added because of fan demand. There was concept art because she was a long planned DLC character.

2:24:50 while some may argue this may be black face its more likely to stem from a very popular fashion in japan some 20+ years back called "Ganguro" in which the mostly pale japanese girls would go overboard with makeup, spray on tan and even bleach their hair to look more "western" this was an actual well liked fashion style back then and there is a lot of documentation on the matter online. In fact one of the first and most popular games in newgrounds back in those days is Ganguro Girl (careful as this game is an adult oriented dating sim.) and if you are to image search "Ganguro" you can find many examples of japanese women using this style. Id say the biggest giveaway of this being mostly based on Ganguro would be the timing. As during the development of Red and Green Ganguro fashion was at the peak of its popularity and Nintendo would never put a decisevely negative racist stereotype in their game, a least not on purpose.
@Do_not_at_me_bro

I've heard of that before. Considering Nintendo has cultural references in their games with tanookies, kapp'n miis ect, it's no surprise jinx would be a Japanese cultural reference of its time. I would argue that anyone who gets morally outraged by misinterpreting media and art are guilty of what they accuse another of doing because they are expressing what they see on their salience landscape. Kind of like those arbitrary images a psychologist shows and the patient describes what they see is how I look at it.

its actually based on the yama-uba yokai myth, a witch with black skin and white hair that lives in the mountains. ganguro would produce a style also based on the appearance of the yama-uba, but jynx was directly inspired by the yokai itself, not ganguro

This was pretty fun to watch! I do want to say that the fact about Jinx at the end there is all but definitely Not true, btw, more just culture shock: Jinx itself is probably based on the Yama-Uba Japanese legend, which is basically legends about a spirit that looks like a woman and sings beautifully, but more relevant here is that Jinx's design most likely comes from the Ganguro fashion that was becoming super popular in Japan around the time of Pokemon's release. You can look it up for pictures, but Ganguro (and Gyaru fashion as a whole) was basically a way for girls to rebel against more traditional Japanese concepts of beauty (dark hair, pale skin, softer/neutral makeup) in girls by becoming very tan, bleaching their hair, and wearing more vibrant makeup. Unfortunately here in the States if you didn't know that fact it could 100% come off as BAD, which it did obviously with Jinx since not many knew about Japanese culture at the time outside of whatever was seen on their tvs.

45:10 Kirby's angry menacing face on western box art is a marketing technique. Look at the differences between the PS1 Spyro games and entire ratchet and clank series and you'll see an American company doing the inverse. In order to market their games in Japan, Insomniac made Spyro look friendlierand childlike by giving him rounder facial features both in game and on the cover art (as well as slowing down Spyro's charge speed and zooming out the camera to reduce motion sickness) and gave Ratchet bushy eyebrows, friendlier faces and poses on the cover art and a younger sounding voice (also completely changed his transformation scene in Gladiator)
