I get where youre coming from, and STILL stray gods is on my personal top 10 for 2023. 😊 If musical "rpgs" were a dime a dozen then maybe not, but just because of the sheer uniqueness of it it's soundtrack it's the thing ive listened to the most this year, barring perhaps some 432hz meditative stuff. Like just listening through playlists of ALL the possible variations took a lot of hours! 😄 My favorite is apollos song, and venus - at least slme variations. Loved the story and performance but the music I wasnt crazy about. For sure hope someone else wants to do something like this, with more story choices (they dont ALL have to be musical choices).

Starfield is like a repeat of Fallout 76, a game that was also accused of being too empty and boring when it launched. Fallout 76 eventually improved by adding some much needed content, and is now "mostly positive" on Steam. They can always fix their games, but they can't fix a ruined first impression. And if they keep doing this, they will ruin their company's reputation also.
@HarakiriRock

I thought the final nail in the coffin for Fallout 76 was when they introduced paid features that turned out to be completely broken. Seemed like a totally irredeemable joke at that point. I stay far away from Bethesda games now, as well as most other AAA titles. This trend of releasing broken garbage and eventually making it half-decent years later needs to stop.

@@ProBreakers I blame most of it on preorder culture and FOMO. There isn't much incentive to release a decent product when they've already sold tons of copies and made their money back before the game ever comes out. Kind of agree, but Starfield was a complete game at launch, despite the internet narrative. Whether you find it fun or not is entirely subjective, but I've noticed the online consensus has shifted from "it's not as great as we hoped," to "it's trash, boo!" The game has an 86% PC Metacritic score, yet Steam reviews are trashing it? The only time I've seen that is f2p games or games overloaded with invasive/predatory microtransatioms... Starfield has neither. No day 1 DLC, as polished & stable a game as Bethesda has ever released, no MTX, etc. That leads me to believe it's suffering from console wars nonsense, which has steadily lead to people over analyzing & dissecting every little issue. I'm just a Nintendo fanboy who plays 90% of games on PC now, but seeing the Steam reviews & social media piling on of this game made me reevaluate how the internet can hijack conversation & warp overall perception.

Great summary! Couple of my thoughts: - I bought Redfall for $10 last month for PC, have solid history with Arkane going back to Arx and STILL managed to be disappointed! - Starfield - also bought last month for ~half price, enjoyed replaying Skyrim and Fallout 4 last year on Steam Deck (~7-8/10 in my opinion) and was very disappointed ... it really indulges all of Bethesda's worst tendencies. Also saw the Warhammer 40k and thought it might be about 'Rogue Trader' before seeing 'Darktide'. Actually enjoying Rogue Trader (also on Steam Deck)

I much prefer darktides setup. Not just for the 40k setting, but also after playing vermintide 2 (or the L4D games or Back 4 Blood) for 500 hours plus, I much prefer the more diverse levels and mission types instead of trying to be a story with a beginning and end. Also not having 5 characters means the banter gets less repetitive as they aren't saying the same exact stories over and over. Also vermintide hardly had a story. It was really just a series of disconnected missions that hardly had anything to do with each other. This game is clearly made for the hardcore fans who played hundreds of hours and bought all the DLC and took their complaints into mind instead of making it for someone to play for 12 hours and never play again.

The reason why Fortnite and League are so popular is because all characters being controlled by humans adds an unpredictable kind of variance to the game even if theoretically the game has the same elements and mechanics in every match. In games where opposition is controlled by cpu, everything eventually becomes predictable and as a result old. When it becomes old is solely a matter of when all options become apparent to the player(s)

I played all the Yakuza games up through Like a Dragon (plus both Judgment games), and got Ishin and it's been sitting on my shelf unplayed while The Man Who Erased His Name is out and the next mainline one is about to come out. I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to restore my enthusiasm and get back on the train to finishing these. Despite it's flaws, it was fun and turned into a long time guilty pleasure. So obviously I was looking forward to the sequel, only to become deeply bummed by the "What the eff is this?!" that eventually dropped! As for Redfall, i wasn't surprised when the game turned out to be bad. I am disappointed however because I adore Arkane Studios. They have made some of my favourite games (Dark Messiah, Arx Fatalis, Dishonored, Prey (2017)) but, i don't think they will make those kinds of interesting games anymore. Redfall absolutely was the worst game of 2023. Darktide we all thought was going to be more than the beta and all we got was the beta. So much money down the drain and developers wonder why people are nervous on making early purchases of games. Starfield was not a bad game but after 60hours, I was done. Thare are so many games like Elite Dangerous and No Man's Sky that do it so much better in so many ways. For example, why cannot I fly from space to the planet and land the ship on my own. Space is dead, there is just not a reason to explore like Elite Dangerous. Games need more time to bake fundamentally to be good and that is our tell, how long has it been in development? How ever long it has been, it needs another 6 months lol!

When you mentioned having to always be online with Warhammer. It made me think of Diablo IV. One of my gripes. My way around it is going into a village as a pause for me The part that sucks is their is no activity for a certain amount of time then it kicks you offline. Maybe at one point in my gaming life I was a puzzle guy but that is no longer the case. Its almost like developers us that as a distraction to keep you from completing the game too fast. I love musicals. "Stray Gods" doesn't sound too bad. Now your decision not really altering the game is disappointing because I will really think about the choices I make. Bad music is never a good thing. Jedi Survivor was not a disappointment but more of a let down. It was like the map and the platforming was not in agreeance with one another. lol I just finished the game last week. Some of the places the game want you to get too seemed impossible. Definitely learn to understand the map right away, if you need playthroughs use them and side quests seem to add nothing to the game.

it annoyed me in Diablo 4, but that game can be played solo. Darktide is always a 4 player coop game, if you don't have a full party it fills with bots just like vermintide or left 4 dead. the only thing they really changed is vermintide had a hosted lobby where you could chill and try out weapons and whatnot. Darktide has replaced the player hosted lobby with online hubs that put you in 3rd person so you can see your cosmetics and buy weapons and go to the shooting range. its a minor annoyance, but the gameplay portion was never meant to be a solo thing.

I find Starfield is the final straw for a lot of people. Bethesda keeps putting a new coat of paint on their archaic engine believing people won't notice the rust and the unashamed reliance on the modding community to fix their shit coding is insulting. You can only release half-assed products for so long.

I didn't play anything that came out this year (unless rom hacks count), but I'm with you on Bethesda; I couldn't get into the Elder Scrolls games, and the only Fallout they made that I liked was New Vegas, and the only thing they made for that was the engine, which was definitely not the best part of it. I did try to get into Fallout 3, but it broke so badly I couldn't use shops anymore before I was more than a few hours in.

I really tried with Elder Scrolls, but something about them just never made me want to stick with them. I liked Fallout 3 and NV a lot when they first came out. They need to evolve a bit to make them more interesting though.

Starfield could have been more than what we got. I blame the dated engine for holding it back. My friend may disagree, but I felt they could have spent their time developing a new engine before releasing Starfield. But even with that, there's still the issue of the writing. I couldn't be fucked to care about the main story. lol I just enjoyed the gameplay of it. Despite the issues, I do want to buy it at some point, but it's definitely not worth the full price, and still not worth the current sales. (30% off for the base game, 25% for the deluxe.)
@Cannotbetamed1

I think a new engine would be good. Also more focus on writing and characters. It's a very different kind of RPG, but the writing and voice performances of pretty much every character in BG3 made me hang onto their every word. When someone in Starfield talked, I didn't care.

I had similar expectations for Darktide as a big fan of the first Vermintide. Tried it out on Gamepass for maybe 30 minutes and never played again. Can't really say why, I guess it just felt like a really generic shooter and absolutely nothing about it captivated me.

Incomplete and buggy games like Redfall and Starfield aren't just bad games, they're incomplete, non-viable products sold under false pretences-- scams.

A lot of games have found grace this year but some didn't : - Tony Pro Skater 2. It's a skateboard game. You're in a garage. It's dull. I don't get the hype. California Games had a more beautiful skating event on the Sega Master System. - Metal Slug 3. Why is it that everybody loves that Neo Geo run and Gump ? True, the sprites are cute, but I wouldn't insert another coin in the machine after 5 minutes of Metal Slug 3. - Grand Theft Auto 2. Let's address the elephant in the room. Doesn't that GTA game look kinda familiar ? It's a rip off of Peter Molineux's Syndicate with a dash of Road Rash on the side. Taking away the premise of the game, it boils down to a top-down shooter, except the Ninja on Sega Master System is actually beautiful and challemging. GTA2 isn't. - Ikaruga. The modern critics make it one of the greatest shmups in history. Understanding Giga Wing 1 and 2 has given me a whole new perspective on Ikaruga's flaws. It is slow, it lacks a story and the atmosphere feels sterile. - Power Stone 2 failed to renew the Beat'Em All genre. I get lost in the sauce. Where am I ? The boss battles exterminate my patience. - Blue Stinger, I went almost to the end and ultimately, I think it is under average, a 4 out of 10, from appalling music, bad story writing, the bad points in this game outmark the good points, unfortunately. On the other hand, Code Veronica after a dull moment in the middle, bounces back.

I love cinematic platformers but there are a LOT of bad ones out there. Probably nothing will beat Flashback. I'm okay with that. Bethesda have always been bad. Fallout 3 was funny, but hard to go back to now. Fallout 4 was not funny, front-loaded for dudebro gamers. 76 wasn't even worth picking up. Starfield is just Todd going through the motions to make money for shareholders. Looking forward to your favourites.

Darktide gets the feel and atmosphere of 40k but without a semi story to drive towards a goal, it becomes boring super fast. Diablo IV was my biggest disappointment. I love 1,2 and 3 but the always online, open world just didn't hook me. Again the lack of real drive in one direction with the story just left me very meh. Which is a crying shame. Deckard Cain's legacy deserved better ha ha

I'm not that familiar with the Warhammer universe, so all the NPC chatter in Darktide, without having any story to ground it was just really confusing.
@williamcadence

@@Cannotbetamed1 I can definitely understand that. It's a big hefty IP that takes effort to wrap your head around and if it doesn't click to start with it never will. That's why i think a cohesive story could have done wonders for it instead of just relying on 40k fans to carry it.

Truth be told as we get older having been around games so long we have seen it played it before and don't fall into same the hype so easily, but for a new younger generation of gamers you have to think of it like some of these games are the MGS and Crash bandicoot of their generation and this is all they know because they won't have played or even heard of many retro games to draw any comparisons, also the games have been designed with this in mind for new audiences not older ones. This is nothing new but I feel adult gamers expectations and experiences they want almost almost surpass what a game can give them, this is where it is time to re-evaluate what it is you are looking for in a game to fulfil your happiness needs.

@@Cannotbetamed1 I think that the media hype around games almost makes them impossible to live up to expectations, however I feel those high standards are set by the adults not the younger gamers, and this is because they are comparing to the games which have already been released in the past. If I could go back in time and discover the PS5 in my teens I would probably be amazed by the quality of the games now, just like I was amazed when I went from a Snes to a PS1, but even during the PS1 days there were lots of filler titles but i think the mainstream industry was at least trying to be a bit more creative and original. The switch is hands down the strongest console for original and unique titles and also obscure Japanese games we would probably never have got back in the day in the west.
