The thing with Hughes is, I believe it’s more the team he is playing for then him. It’s hard for any player to be expected to carry a team in their first year. If you look at it Subban stats has also dropped playing for the devils and the reason is THEY SUCK. I mean seriously you could probably put Ovechkin on the team and they probably still wouldn’t be any good. It’s time for a rebuild in New Jersey and it should start with making every effort to bring in a goalie. Every good team has a good goalie and even mediocre teams can become good with the right one. It all starts with strong goaltending. Remember when the Devils had Brodeur. There were quite a few years when they had nothing else but him and they were still winning cups.

Jack Hughes also shouldn't have been in the NHL last season. He doesn't have the size yet and you could clearly see he was overwhelmed at times. A year in college would have done him a lot of good. He'll still be a solid NHL player in the long run, but he won't be the best player taken in 2019.

Not likely. He's not projected to grow much more, and has struggled to win 40% of his faceoffs even in junior tournaments (where he should have dominated). He's an AHL-level Center - which is why he was moved to wing for the last 20 games. His mental game is appalling, with passes-to-nowhere and a lack of finish that shows he's just not NHL caliber - and the problem with being mentally incapable of performing is that's really tough to overcome. Some exceptional Juniors just can't handle the speed and intelligence of NHL players - and that's what I think we're going to see here. The biggest single mistake the Dev's made was making him a Day-1 starter - he critically needed another year of development. Well, the single biggest mistake was taking Hughes over Kakko... But.......

As a Devils fan, Pavel Zacha is so goddamn frustrating. It's too early to tell with Hughes, but Zacha will do absolutely nothing and make costly mistakes, then follow with a short period of improvement. It makes you feel like he's finally reaching a turning point and will start playing like the 6th overall pick he is, and then his progress inevitably regresses and stalls again. Watching him on a line with Bratt and Gusev has been promising, and I keep wanting to hold out hope for him, but every time I'm reminded of his draft class, I want to scream.

Wings fan here - every team has busts and when you're drafting late every year like we did during the playoff streak, the draft can be really hit or miss. But recently, the one that broke my heart was Evgeny Svechnikov. Not so much because 19th overall picks never bust or anything, but the potential for that kid seemed so massive and the NHL's long tradition of downgrading Russian players made it look like we might have a major steal. Now, I'm not sure the guy is ever going to even make the NHL - he's big-ish and has an aggressive streak so maybe he could transition to a checking line forward, but my dreams of a 30 goal sniper at pick 21 are clearly out the window.

I disagree with your assessment of Kotkaniemi. The kid is 19. He was the youngest player in his draft year. He was hurt at the end of last season, needed surgery, and couldn’t work out/ get into better shape over the summer. This season he was still dealing with that and a lack of talented wingers. He earned his spot on the team last year, just like he did this season. Everyone knew he was 2 years away from being really ready physically. Next season, the kid is going to be a stud. Just wait and see.

Chicago: Panarin. Mostly because the former clader cup winner was traded for brandon saad.🤦♂️
@BSAnime
4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Breen 1. He was undrafted 2. Salary cap issues caused the trade... 3. Chicago wouldn't have traded if Panarin wanted to stay. Panarin said he wanted to go to a big city (I guess bigger than Chicago I guess... so NY or LA?...) and he would not want to stay so there was no chance at an extension Yes the trade was very underwhelming. But look at the trade now. What does CBJ have now? Nothing. What do we have... Saad. So I guess Chicago still got the win. (and I'm a hawks... and yes the ordeal burns me too... but it happened for a reason)

Frk misses the net a lot. I watched him quite a bit when he was in Grand Rapids. He was a big part of the Calder Cup winning team. But he misses the net quite a bit. That’s why he could never hold an NHL roster spot. Also not really reliable in the defensive end. He’s a one dimensional player.

Video idea: blues draft history from 09-now. In that span, they’ve only had 4 draft picks 20 or higher (Rundblad 09 at 17th, Schwartz 14th and Tarasenko 16th both 2010, Thomas 17 at 20th) and many years without a first round pick, yet made the playoffs almost every year and (obviously) just won the cup. I’m a bit of a homer, but I believe no other club in that time has done a better job drafting and developing

Definitely Alex Galchenyuk. He had a few solid seasons for Montreal but he definitely was not a top 3 pick. It also hurts a bit when you look at who was drafted after him (Morgan Reily, Hampus Lindholm, Matt Dumba, Jacob Trouba and my personal favourite Filip Forsberg...the one I wanted Montreal to draft)

Jack Hughes is terrible, his dad works in the NHL, that's how his kid got so much hype. Another example Eric Nystrom, was a 1st Rounder, the guy could not play. NHL is a boys club, former players get their kids drafted because of the last name, not skill. Look at Primeau's kid, the goalie. terrible.

I feel like the top three picks from the last draft have gotten blasted a ton because they haven't been amazing. We were blessed/cursed by players like Crosby and Kane because they came in and immediately started kicking ass. They are legendary players, not every top pick is gonna be like them. Players like Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes have had more time to develop and get better, which has helped them become who they have been this past season. People need to give Jack, Kakko and Dach more time, if they underperform in a couple years, then fair enough.

Blues fan, I’d have to say our most disappointing pick, hands down, was Erik Johnson. Still reeling from the loss of two NHL top 100 players in D MacInnis and Pronger, E.J. was billed as a franchise two way D. Was only mediocre on the D side and never showed much offense. And consider the four players taken after him: J Staal, Toews, Backstrom, Kessel

Y'all just need to realize, in 2020 its getting harder and harder for players to be amazing in their first year! The game is faster than ever, more physical than ever. Most of the 90s and early 00s wouldnt even make a roster in todays game. The game is getting better, and drafting players at 18 will be questionned more and more. Should they go to college? Should they play 4 years in the juniors etc

tbf everyone should’ve recognized that hughes wasn’t gonna be a top nhl talent right away, he was so undersized but could still easily become a top player in the league. he’s not necessarily a super flashy player too, but in terms of fundamentals, he’s damn near perfect. plus he’s just in general one of the best skaters in the league

Hughes rarely played on the first line for those of you who claimed he did. If the player is less than 23 years old, give them some time to develop, it can take time. Look at Joe Thornton’s rookie year where he had 7 pts, or look at how long it took MacKinnon to become a star in the league.
