It would be more accurate to say he got the Nobel for his work on autophagy rather than for discovering it. Autophagy was discovered in 1963 by Christian de Duve who won the Nobel in 1974: when Ohsumi began to work on autophagy in 1988 autophagy was already known for 25 years !!! In 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for the discovery of the molecular principles governing autophagy. I started while traveling around the world & annoyed to take several hours for lunch, so started fasting with one meal a day. I've done longer (10 day) fasts. Eating 3 meals a day is just a habit, our bodies aren't built for that. Start slowly 1 day at a time, keep busy, drink water or tea when you have hunger pangs, in half an hour they go away, you'll start burning fat and have so much energy you won't believe it. did you try losing weight a different way before? I’m wondering if IF might be that effective, because it makes it easier to maintain a calorie deficit. Reducing calories while eating 3 meals a day might be more difficult, because you’ll feel less satisfied after each meal as you had to eat less than you’re used to, while IF allows you to eat the usual amount (if not a little bit more) but just for less meals in total. If that makes any sense lol
@RetroXRicardo

The statement that hit home was - ''Cancer can only survive in an acid environment''. Our bodies struggle to keep us in a slightly alkaline state, but a bad diet and polluted environment makes this very difficult. All of this acid/alkaline stuff ties in perfectly with the Keto lifestyle and the absolute game-changer is intermittent fasting.

Excellent presentation Dr Berg. The facts you brought forth can not only improve health, but save lives. A simple test that everyone should do - pick a day - my day starts Friday evening, I eat my last meal - whatever I want (keto/carnivore), then I don't eat again until Sunday morning. If I want a coffee or tea, go ahead, but avoid calories. Sunday morning have your first light meal, by noon you will feel like a king!... or Queen... try it just once... I used to do this each and every week, it became a very natural thing to do. I now do this a couple times a month as I'm building muscle and training for more strenuous calisthenics and crossfit .

I always love watching Dr. Berg. It helps me keep going with my fasting and keto diet but more importantly with keeping my body as healthy as I can. Thank you so much for another very informative video. I do intermittent fasting but I haven't tried autophagy yet (my brother is on his third day today). Now I'm ready to take my fasting to a higher level. :) :) :)

A 24-hour fast was all it took to radically lighten my eye floaters. I,ve been fasting for months but my eyesight didn't really improve till I started extending my fasts. I'm thoroughly impressed and my tooth sensitivity improved too. Autophagy doing its magic😊

This is such a powerful motivation not to eat sweet things or sugar! Lost a friend this year to liver cancer. She was trim and looked fit but loved eating sweet things: sweet tea, asian cuisine, breakfast sandwiches, hamburgers, pastries, take out restaurant meals and chocolate. All of these foods have added sugar and she kept feeding her cancer, fertilizing it until she was consumed by it. 😫

When you got a simpler answer, you know that it's closer to the truth.
@afterthesmash

We _had_ a simple answer for four decades, and it was wrong-headed: too many calories in, too few calories out. As it turns out, to have a vigorous and robust metabolism, it also matters when and how you consume those calories. This is a great deal _less_ simple, but far closer to reality. You're using "simple" here as a synonym for nicely packaged at the center of your present understanding. Most people do. You're using "simple" as the original +1 works for me, adored by those whose believe that simplicity should be simple. Right. That's why in the true quest for simplicity, it takes an Einstein to show us how to do it properly. The false belief that simplicity ought to be simple is the reason why society (in the large) fell for the phoney explanation that the core underlying problem was merely calories in, calories out, while evidence amassed for decades that the majority of people subjecting themselves to simplistic calorie-restriction diets-especially as packaged by Weight Watchers-ended up on a long-term treadmill of getting fatter and fatter. But blame this not on Weight Watchers, but on the faulty willpower of the 80%, because blame is the ultimate rescue of a failed oversimplification, painful rethinking not required.

Hey Dr Berg, When you say you need fuel and it produces oxygen.. would a cancer cel cause you not to sweat during exercise? I randomly became unable to sweat, and I would instead breakout in hives. Went to many doctors that didn’t know what was going on, and one diagnosed me with exercised induced hives. I found your channel and did two 3 day fasts. I am completely cured and enjoy an active lifestyle again. Don’t know exactly how this happened but I am assuming the autophagy got rid of the bad cells that were causing this. Love your channel, and I really think the information I learned from you saved my life.

Wow, such a GREAT video, you're like an angel, and the world needs more people like you, who are serious about wellness!!! You also explain things perfectly, which is super helpful, too!!! I'm going to work on the things you spoke about!!! Most of them I already knew about, but, I respond well to hearing them again and getting back in the mode, which I'm often too distracted to do on my own. Your videos really help, to keep me grounded and visualizing my next steps. You're fantastic, thank you very, very much!!!!

Been eating 1 meal a day for 2 weeks+ now. Diet is kinda keto if not exactly keto. Lost 11 pounds. Also doing hiit 5 times a week. After 2 weeks, this is easily doable. Warning- one day at a party I ate some carbs- rice, oily food and alcohol. I was hungry a few hours later. Basically, try to stay away from carbs and sugar.

I think that it is prudent to say that fasting and autophagy MAY help in regards to (some types of) cancer. This is very new science, so it is premature to make really bold claims. Keto, exogenous ketones, and fasting/autophagy are recognized as perhaps useful ADJUNCTS, or complimentary diets, but not curative. This is much more complex than a 6 minute video, so viewer caution is advised.

Thank you always for everything you're doing to improve your fellow human's lives. Seriously, we cannot thank you enough! 🙏💗 I just went 22 hours fasting, not eating even the slightest snack. It is interesting that I came home in the middle of last night from work, feeling just a bit of hunger when I went to bed - yet when I got up today I didn't feel any hunger at all and went about my day for 5 hrs longer, and could have gone probably all day today without eating. I figure this is because my body is very well fat adapted, even though I've been allowing myself a bit more carbs per day, (of course mindful to not going over 50 grams), since I've gotten down to the weight that I want to be almost 10 mos ago. Is this correct?
