Jesse Owens was given a autographed photo of Hitler that he was given after winning the gold medal he cherished this photo until he died and by the way Hitler was the one who personally gave it to Owens also he didn't have a good pair of shoes to compete in so Hitler had Addis make him a pair of running shoes

This was the second fight between the two men, Max won the first fight via a 12th round KO. It should be noted that Max was opposed to the Nazi regime, at one point even providing sanctuary and hiding Jews from the Nazis. Joe and Max ended up becoming very close friends and Schmelling helped Louis when he faced financial difficulty in later years, as well as paying towards Joe's funeral costs. There was a TV movie based on their rivalry and friendship "ring of passion" (super sus title lmao). Two great boxers and two great men.

I read where Schmelling hurt his back in a parachute accident before the fight and that caused him to be physically unable to perform as he should have, but took the fight anyway and lost.

Joe being a patriot despite the country he lived in being very racist is admirable. Couldn't even use the front entrance in a lot of places during that era. Schmelling representing a genocidal regime but also being a decent human being is also quite admirable. Sometimes we try to represent the best parts of our deeply troubles societies.
