When I was going through RCIA, I had a young/new priest tell me the evening before he had received a call for a parishioner whose family was requesting the Anointing of the Sick. This particular parishioner had had a bad heart for some time and it was pretty well known, he didn't have a lot of time left. So, that evening when things got bad, the priest was called to the hospital as the fellow had been taken to the ER. My priest told me that this fellow's heart was very close to failure and if the man had made it through the night, he would be transferred to another hospital for surgery. The priest told me as he was performing the rite, he felt as if the Holy Spirit were guiding him NOT to do the Last Rites portion, so he said he did not give this man "last rites". When I spoke to the priest that day he said, the family had called him that morning and the man's heart had actually stabilized and he would NOT be transferred for surgery but would be kept another night for observation.

I was an Altar Boy when I was in grade school. I was called by our Parish Priest to accompany him to the house of the sick next door neighbor who was left by two doctors to die. She was already gasping for breath. He annointed the sick. The next hours the person asked for porridge and was around the house the next day doing light chores. She lived many years after.

Many years ago, the priest who was my pastor at my home parish for 12 years from childhood up into my being in the university had told me that, early in his presbyterate, in another town, he had brought all three of the last Sacraments to a man who was dying of cancer back around 1960. Ten years later he showed up at the rectory of our parish to visit our priest (who had anointed him, absolved him and given him Eucharist), hale and hearty, exhibiting no evidence that he had ever had cancer.

Our local churches wouldn’t allow priests in the hospital and the only catholic priest that was in the hospital was nowhere to be found. Years ago, when I had a compound fracture, I asked for the Sacrament of the Sick before emergency surgery. I truly believe it helped me. It took the surgeons two hours just to clean out the dirt, horse manure, sticks and stones in my arm before they could even put the arm back together. They were terrified of tetnus (they told me after). It was a bad break but healed well. I got back 95% of the movement of the arm back. This is a wonderful sacrament. (On the way to the hospital, I said the ‘Hail Mary’ like a mantra - it kept me from fainting from the pain. Bless you for this channel🙏🏼

15 years ago, I was rushed into the hospital for an infection. My appendix burst and I was going to die if they did not disinfect my abdominal cavity. My mother, called our priest to give me the anointing of the sick. The doctor emphasized that I will not die because it was caught in time, and appendectomies are almost always successful, but this is where I learned that it's still appropriate to receive the anointing of the sick. I did and thankfully, I pulled through. I probably would have even without the sacrament, although receiving it made me feel braver and opened my eyes to the understanding that it's going to be okay.

There were still lingering scars, but I went from being unable to roll over on my on to walking without any assistance almost instantaneously. Any doubts I had about the Eucharist or priesthood, I have no excuses left. The priest said 'yeah that happens sometimes, take care' like it was just another day.

Sadly, I waited too long before calling for a priest for my late husband. He was in a hospice and although he wasn't unresponsive, he was so sick that he really couldn't participate. I stepped out of the room a few minutes after the priest came in. I hesitated doing it when he was in the hospital before the hospice because I didn't want him to think I thought he was near death. I wish he and I had talked more about it before it got to that point. Although I'm a convert, I guess the 2 sacraments had blurred together. I have so many regrets and guilt about waiting.

And let this be a warning to others: it is false mercy to pretend that someone who is near death is not near death, for this denies the patient opportunity to prepare for death. Though we do not know the day or hour of anyone's death until it is upon us (excepting such cases as condemned prisoners, who are told when they will be put to death), there are many signs that tell when it is near, and it is wrong to hide this from the patient, denying him the awareness that he is about to meet his Judge. If the patient then recovers, so much the better, but the patient has a right to know when he/she is at death's door.

During the last hospitalization, before going to hospice, the doctors had told him that nothing was working and he wouldn't get better. He responded and told them he knew it. I called our Diocese to try and get a priest well ahead of him going into the hospice, but could never get an answer. The hospice was able to get a priest the same day. Anyway, it should have been done well before it was.

Exactly, Fr Casey. Thank you for explaining this sacrament. I had a bitter experience regarding this when I asked for this sacrament for my closest relative and the priest (an OFM one coincidentally) began quizzing me like my relative was on the deathbed. Ultimately, he did not come at all in spite of the request made. Thankfully, my relative did make a full recovery though, because of regular prayers and medical care. Still causes me great pain when I remember the agony we had to go through when all we desired was for this sacrament to be administered.

As Catholics, we are blessed to have this wonderful Sacrament. Thank you for your explanation of this Sacrament. I hope it will increase its use. In November, I suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while in the hospital and my heart stopped for over a minute. They were able to contact a friend who is a priest and he came and gave me the Anointing before I was taken in to the OR. I was able to have a quick confession but no Eucharist as he was not prepared for the call. From the time the anointing began, I could slowly feel the Holy Spirit flow over and embrace me. While they were transporting me to the OR, I told God I was read to go if that was his plan. I was totally calm and without fear. Two days later I had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator implanted and was sent home. Exactly one week after the cardiac arrest, I had a severe heart attack on the side of the road. It took over 45 minutes for EMS to get to me and get me to the hospital. Although I was in a great deal of pain, I was never afraid of death. The Holy Spirit was still with me and comforting me. This time, it was the ‘widow maker’ artery that had two blockages of 80 and 90%. I was blessed to be able to receive the Sacrament again while they were preparing me for surgery the second time. I have been transported twice since then for less serious heart issues with the same feeling of grace. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus and the Sacraments of His Holy Church, I know that whatever the outcome, I have nothing to fear.

The sacrament of the Annoiting of the sick is very important. I work in a convalescent home and I have seen a few patients die. Who knows if the patient families go and take a minister for the blessing because I work in the night shift, but for sure even as a Catholic, people are not aware of this sacrament. I see hospice nurses go to visit the patient but some patients die instantly. Death is not bad but as a human being dying, I will recommend patients to receive the blessing before dying. I am thinking when I become a registered nurse, I want to be a critical care nurse. Working in a convalescent home has brought me passion for medicine. I wish I could even be a physician.

James 5:14,15 is exactly what came to me at the start of this video clip. 4 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. (NASB) Two quick points 1. "...the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick..." 2. "...if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven. Faith, from the one who prays is required.

Thank you Fr. Casey for explaining the specifics and differences of Anointing of the Sick and the Last Rites. Both are grace filled Sacraments of the Catholic Church. But what if the Priests himself refuses to give the Sacrament to an ill elderly person? My brother asked the head Priest of our Parish if he could administer the Sacrament to my father. He refused because he said he is not dying, though serious, not critical. Months past and an elderly Priest of our Parish asked my brother of how our father is doing. In GOD’s grace when my Mom told me that the elderly Priest ask about our father’s situation, it dawned on me that my brother can ask this Priest, and he said yes. So he came and my father was able to do his confession and Anointing was given. It’s not only the lay people who are confuse, but some Priests too.

I remember receiving the anointing of the sick before a surgery on my left knee after I broke that kneecap. I don't remember if it was before my first or second surgery on the knee. This occurred back in 2015.

A very misunderstood sacrament. I've seen it go the other way too, where a priest invited everyone present at a Mass - sick or not - to come forward for anointing. He even claimed you could receive it on behalf of another person, holding them "in your heart". Such a shame that the sacraments get reduced down to something "nice" to do.

Thank you for such a providential video, Father! As a quarantined seminarian, I’d love to know: what if a priest cannot make it to the faithful due to sanitary restrictions and latest confession was some weeks ago?

Lovely video as always! I grew up evangelical {now im free-range protestant interested in catholicism} and we do something similarly based off of the James verse. I had a major major surgery 10 years ago, and essentially all the elders came together and I was in the center of the room, and they prayed for me and laid their hands on my head. I think they put a little oil on my head. You have to make an appointment. I love that you are promoting this for your followers -- I think the prayer was so meaningful in having the Holy Spirit keep me strong as I underwent the ordeal and with the doctors, and if I find myself in the situation again {a serious one of course}, I certainly will do it again.

Unfortunately where I live there are priests who say that the anointing of the sick should only be done once a year at most, and get annoyed when called to see the parishioner. I appreciate your explanation.

Thank you Fr Casey. This is the sacrament that most are reluctant to receive because of its association with death. So when my grandma passed away 7 1/2 years ago when I called a priest I called after she had passed. In hindsight it's a mistake on my part but I'm learning. I watch a lot of your videos and have learned a lot from them.

Mark 16:17-20 King James Version (KJV) 17 And these signs SHALL follow them that believe; In my name SHALL they cast out devils; they SHALL speak with new tongues; 18 They SHALL take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it SHALL not hurt them; they SHALL lay hands on the sick, and they SHALL recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto THEM, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and CONFIRMING the word with signs following. Amen. You can’t have one without the other. To prove you can heal from God, consume a deadly thing. If you examine the scripture, all of those gifts we’re done instantaneously. Revelation 2:2 King James Version 2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast TRIED them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

Thank you Fr. Casey for explaining the specifics of Anointing of the Sick, it is a very beautiful, grace filled Sacrament for Catholics. But what if the Priest himself refuse the Sacrament? My brother asked the head Priest of our Parish if he could administer this Sacrament to our father who is ill, but refused, he said my father is not dying only has illness. Months past, when one of the elder Priests ask my brother of how our father is, and in GOD’s grace, 2 weeks ago this elderly Priest said yes and visited my father for confession and Anointing of the Sick. I guess it’s not only the lay people who are confuse but some Priests too.

"Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” Saint James.
