I made the jump from Garmin to coros and I get the popularity of both. Coros unlike Garmin, doesn't even bother to cater to people who are not athletes already. They do not nag you with goals that were not reached, steps, calories, and so on. They know why you got a coros and that you do not need motivation. They sell tools, and for such a race, that is exactly what you want.

That is what I love about coros watches as well. Yet, I can't understand why they won't add a motivational screen or two and intensity minutes as an easy to understand measure. As much as I've enjoyed my coros, I sold it again. All my casual friends and my casual athlete gf bought a Garmin and do group challenges, so I've stayed with my Garmin as well. Garmin is catering to all groups, whereas coros kind of 'ignores' recreational athletes, which I think is a mistake What I love most about coros are the simplicity of use and the long battery life. The HR sensor hasn't been the most accurate on me

Coros Apex Pro 2 user here...Bought Polar Grit X Pro 1 year ago, used 4 to 5 times per week and in June I showed up for a 111km trail run. I've been running with a Coros watch for the past two years; initially the Apex Pro and then the Vertix and I've LOVED the battery life. However, I just started cycling and recently picked up a Garmin 840 and I realized that having me biometric, and activity data in two places was going to drive me nuts so I did some research and decided to swap my Vertix 2 for an Epix Pro Sapphire 51mm. My biggest concern was battery life. I'm actually confident that the Epix would be fine for a 100 mile race but I have a 200 mile race coming up and I'm not certain if it's going to be able to sustain for that entire race. I decided that I would simply bring a battery pack and if I need to charge it at some point, then that's what I'll do. Just went for my first run with the Epix 2 today and I've got to say, I love the watch. Love the interface and frankly Garmin Connect blows the Coros Training Hub out of the water. Like it's not even close. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't have the desire to put all my data in one place, I would have just stuck with the Vertix 2- It's an amazing watch.

If you have 2 watches take a small power pack and run both. If it can charge a phone 80% it’s gonna do your watch quite a few times. If only there was a strap mounted external battery add on.

Interesting stats! I didn't realize Garmin would have that much of a lead over other brands. I have a Fenix 7 and love it for the battery life. I'm not a runner but do a lot of hiking and it's been perfect. I'd wager that it's because those outdoors (running, hiking, etc) often just want the tracking features and maps etc and don't care about phone calls or messages or whatever other social apps giving us notifications.

I own Garmin and Suunto Watches. It is no surprise for me to see Garmin getting the larger share in these few years as they nailed the job. I used Suunto watch in the past because the software of Garmin watches are not stable even they have enormous features . Still remember my wife and I joined one virtual race event few years ago and my wife Garmin encountered software collapsed so no result could be submitted to the event. It seems Garmin knew their weakness and fixed this major flaw. I haven't encounter system crash in these two years of using Garmin watches.

I used to use a Suunto 9 before switching back to Garmin. I did so because Suunto did not support comped workouts for years. I still miss the beauty and usability of Suunto, while I bought my third Garmin in a row (Epix Gen2 now). Somehow I feel pity and I root for Suunto, and I’m still being open to switch back. I don’t want them to disappear from the market. :)

I think when it comes to the Apple Watch Ultra it was a good first step for Apple but probably the ultra hardcore people are gonna stick with Garmin. For me who casually runs and does a lot of exercise the Ultra battery life is great but I can easily see how someone who does running for a living would go with Garmin or Coros. I think Apple close the gap a lot by gen 3 though. They already are making strides in the software of the watch based on what was shown at WWDC.

I dont/cant do (ultra)marathons, but I've always been outdoorsy. I use Garmin (7X) because of battery life and the map implementation (and the build in flashlight). I suspect there are a pretty large overlap between ultra runners and outdoorsy and while the latest Apple watches certainly can do an ultra they still cant do a long weekend (or more) hiking or other outdoor activities without a recharge. I used a Suunto years ago and liked it a lot, but to me it seems like they haven't been able to keep up with Garmin on map functionality. I like to keep to one watch for everything and not only because of price. It's just convenient and I'll never get another device that need charging daily or almost daily.

I don't think there's a WearOS watch that can handle an ultra 😅 I'm running my first 50K in a few weeks and will have a Fitbit Charge 6 on my wrist. We'll see how far the Charge takes me, as I look at a 100-miler later in the year. I've been using a Fitbit since 2019, and my fitness journey didn't start with running. So I'm not a super running-data nerd. I'm more of a "set it and forget it" type runner - just track my distance, pace, elevation, and I can focus on my run. I'm definitely feeling the pressure from my ultra-running friends to grab a Coros or Garmin

Fenix and Epics would bug me half way with the weight. I know I'm being super picky, but I know this would bug me at some point. I find if I run with someone with an apple watch, they don't like data. they want to know the basics, that's it. I would love to try a Coros, I just don't want to spend the money on it at this point. Suunto and Polar just don't have the marketing. I also find they are a few years behind and just copy what others are doing. and my final thought, I have no idea how runners run with no watch. It would drive me nuts not knowing data. Thanks for the awesome video.

Are you still using the "free" silicone band that comes with it and/or did you get the Sapphire? Getting the Sapphire (and Titanium) saves 10 grams, which is more than 15% off the weight. Replacing the silicone band with nylon can take off 24 grams or more than 25% of the weight. You can get the Epix Pro Sapphire down more than 30 grams less that an out-of-the-box Epix Pro Standard.

Their Ambit series was amazing for the time it was released but the company has been really struggling do release anything that would be on a par with competition ever since. Still it's quite shocking that Polar is non-existent in these stats.

I believe its about battery life and functionality of the watch within the given sport. Apple thought that it could advertise there way to having a watch that could be used by outdoor enthusiasist/ ultra runners without having a decicated maps software like gamin with turn by turn etc. And, lets not forget, battery life. The uktra is certainly thick enough to add a battery large enough to support longer wear. But as we all know Apple is known for there trickle affect. Only giving customers a tiny upgrade each year, and call it revolutionary? Do not get me wrong i own an ultra and an epix they are both great. But Apple really needs to have a maps sofware like Garmin if it wants to chip away at Garmins stronghold.

I’ve been using an Apple Watch Ultra for running for about a year and a half. It is a great smart watch, but wholly underwhelming running watch. I miss Garmin Connect, Apple fitness super duper sucks in comparison. The data presentation is subpar and having to build workouts using just the watch is terrible. Having to do multiple swipes/touches on the touchscreen on the Apple Ultra to end a run vs using one of the buttons is also a huge suck factor. Also, I’m considering doing my first ultra (50m) and am really concerned about using it for that because of battery life.

I get on these ultras, that apple watch isnt being used... if the battery lasted longer, it would be more desirable from simply not needing to bring a phone with you, and having the means of an emergency phone. I have used my apple watch on a rim to rim, which granted after nearly 12 hours of hiking, was kinda low on the battery, but that was an apple watch 6, and on marathons, with the ultra, which had plenty of batter life left, access to a phone, messages, walkie talkie, etc, was so much better than lagging a phone with me.

The progress of Coros is largely thanks to Kilian's transfer from Suunto to the Coros ecosystem.

The day Garmin starts releasing the upgrades for old hardware, I’ll move to Garmin. Example - Morning report, stress load etc not available on F6 pro. I have AW S7 and F6 pro. Garmin usually keeps the upgrades hardware specific. Good video, we can only see AWU in crazy long events when Apple comes up with offline mapping and 5-6 days battery life.

Marketing get your foot in the door. Wallets are the true validation. Garmin, please continue to focus on fitness related features and long battery life. Let AW handles remotely flushing the toilet.

I went Polar m400, Garmin 235, Coros Apex, Polar V2. I much prefer the Polar experience for general use and training, I found the garmin experience pretty disapointing & didn't really bother using the app wheras I use the Polar app a lot. The Apex app was in the middle, and they improved it a lot around the time I got the V2. I don't see myself moving off Polar for day to day life, activities & training, but I could see the Apex coming out of the cupboard if I ever do really long or multiday stuff. That's for the general battery life & robustness. If I ever buy Garmin again it'll be the handheld GPS devices which look really useful. I note that my inov-8 shoes and silva & ledlenser headtorches don't get on the lists too, but the injinji socks do. Maybe some of this is because of trends in different countries? I've only been running 10 years, but I've seen very few people using Suunto in the UK, lots with Garmin (because that's what their mates have).

100% the popular stuff will vary from country to country. Some brands aren't even available in some regions. These results really only paint a picture in the USA. I'd love to see similar data compiled at something like UTMB!

Really sorry for Polar. Since the first Vantage V nothing has really be done from them. I remember the Time Polar was ruling them all 😅

They're still alive. I think we'll see something new from them soon... I hope!

I'd have to disagree but I sincerely hope I'm wrong. When I first started running I used to have the polar v800 but in my opinion since then they have been not really coming out with any state-of-the-art devices and Polar seems to be more focussed on software now then the hardware.

Ehhhh... I don't think so! Polar is still one of the top external sensor manufacturers and more popular in other non-ultra sports. They also haven't released anything new in a while. Hopefully something exciting comes soon and revives the brand!
