To me, it's more gross fetishization than dehumanizing. "Beautiful creature" is an innocuous phrase that's often been used by someone admiring the beauty of another. Essentially this is just the whities admiring their "beautiful black skin" which does definitely feel weird and gross, but the focus on the word creature does seem like a mistake. And yeah I get that there's a history of dehumanization there, but in this case i think they objected to the wrong part. Also, I don't understand why it seems like they've never interacted with black people. The white family is insane.

When Carmen raised her voice at Rose I physically flinched. Like let’s not beat around the bush here, that’s verbal abuse. As a parent you just do not scream expletives at your child. Every time Rose talks to her mom it feels like she’s picking her words super carefully walking on eggshells so she doesn’t get screamed at or guilt tripped or dragged into an exhausting argument. I lived in that exact situation and it’s caused me serious lasting issues. Also important: if Carmen acts like this while she knows she’s on camera, what do you think she does when no one’s filming.

Yeah and you know that rose probably didn't even want to do this but her family def pressured/guilted her into being a part of the show. Like her parents were just interested in the fetishization/ "I can say slurs now" part while rose was like "I might as well just try to learn what I can I guess"

She clearly sees herself as a trailblazer of interracial understanding, as someone so open and forward-thinking, and "not like those other white people who can't see the value in other races". Therefore the idea that she actually fails too sometimes and unconsciously falls into the same thought patterns and behaviour as the people she looks down on is unbearable to her, and instead of thinking about WHY black people tell her that some stuff she does or says isn't okay, she considers them ungrateful for not appreciating her being "better" than the average racist. @@LizardKingRequiem dude no standing up to white karens just = being physically assaulted and having the cops called on you lmaooooo like literally every time I listen to one of those reddit videos where a walmart karen accuses some random non-employee of literally KIDNAPPING A CHILD (said non-employees child, while doing grocery shopping like a normal person), then is like I WILL GET YOU FIRED AND IM BURNING THIS SUPERMARKET DOWN WITH ME. white carmens are never told no and if you challenge their worldview at all it is a PERSONAL ATTACK, not just correcting an outdated sentiment or phrase (my mom has unironically said "ching chong chinaman" and then tried to argue thats NOT racist when I stared at her in horror). the entitlement is unreal. that said, in spite of all of the obvious privileges most boomer white ladies have, a lot of my mom's (and women who grew up poor in her era) anger does come from not being "heard" or taken seriously when she was younger. my mom's family was horrifically abusive and she grew up being spoken down to and corrected constantly, even when she was objectively not wrong. being hyperdefensive and combative, ive learned, comes from a place of fear -- not necessarily OF the other person, but that you upset the other person unknowingly. its REALLY UNFORTUNATE trauma response, but when show-carmen says "I want my heart to be heard," I think what she's trying to say is "I dont have the vocabulary to say the right things, and I'm frustrated that the words I do have are hurting the people I'm trying to connect with." That doesnt make it right or good, but man at least 30-some years of living under and then unraveling the generational trauma I have has helped me speak karen, for better or for worse :| I wish they had an actual therapist (Not a "race expert" wtf is that) mediating, in part so that the black folks didnt have to do the emotional labor of teaching carmen the basics of race relations. and whats more upsetting about this is that its clearly not a thing of "the past was bad," because this was a major issue during the BLM protests a few summers back. White people kept fucking up and then being like "MY ONE BLACK FRIEND, TEACH ME BLACK" and its like...nooo thats not how this works, learn yourself ya lazy donkey I mean I also wish they didnt do ALLL the blackface too askdhfasj

It's entirely because both Carmen and those men objectify black people/women and do not view them as people, but something that can give them something. For the men it's sex, and for Carmen it's their worship to make her feel better and more powerful. In both cases they believe they are entitled to it, so when those groups turn out to be actual people with autonomy they become enraged. Another way to put it is nice guys will be nice to women without actually respecting them and then expect sex. Carmen believes that her "kindness" should earn her adoration, even when she doesn't even view this family as people.

I appreciate that both Jordan and Jarvis were never afraid of calling out Rose's tone-deafness (while still giving her some slack because she was a minor). In the last videos, there were a ton of people defending her and wanting to think she was this woke child that's completely separated from her parents, but that's the image people wanted to make of her and not the reality, which is more complicated. It never stopped me from speaking my mind and saying my parents were wrong, just stopped me from saying it in front of them. What would have been a smart move is to not have said anything at all because naturally her mom would have yelled at her unless she 100% agreed. "I don't want to have to think about my words" is some privileged nonsense. I grew up in a constant state of "picking my words" to coddle the sensibilities of white, Christian, neurotypical people I was always surrounded by. I did it to fucking survive and not feel like a total alien. The fucking nerve of this woman.

I told my husband the same thing. I'm white but my mom reminds me of Carmen. I am ND and I had to constantly be hypervigilant and on edge about what I said to not offend her, yet when it comes to her she can say whatever bigoted racist shit she wants.
@_Moe

@Oz I empathize completely. From a young age I had to mask constantly because my mother didn't want me "on the short bus" and it seriously impeded my educational and personal growth. Not only that but she's white and I'm not so I had to deal with the "I'm not racist I have a brown child" BS, too. But I'm happy to say that she's improved these past few years because me and my siblings have gained the courage to stand up to her and call her out. She still tries to pretend that she wasn't that bad, but I can also tell she's slowly taking what we say to heart. She has even asked for advice on how to communicate with ND people for her work as a nurse. I recognize that I'm lucky enough to have a parent who's willing to listen and change but I hope, someday, your mother will learn too. But if she has failed you too many times then I hope you cut her off because you deserve better.

"she thought it was a compliment to call somebody a beautiful Black creature" like, what year does she think she lives in? 1863? People in the early 2000s heard 'creature' and they thought 'non-human animal'. Very obvious that somebody would hear they were a "beautiful Black creature" and get offended, like, you just called them a non-human animal and implied it's because they're black, wtf is wrong with you 28:45 You can see that woman's heart break in realtime. I feel like she must've learned the truth about Carmen for real off-screen, and then they filmed like, a reenactment of the moment afterwards. No way we can know for sure, obviously, but that's the vibe I'm getting. Either that or they cut out a LOT, because I just can't believe Diana would've actually taken it all in stride and bounced back _that_ quickly. Plus something about the whole "Yeah I'm waiting for Carmen, and YOU SURE AS HELL AREN'T HER, HAHAHA..." feels kinda. Y'know. Staged. God poor Rose, this show is the perfect depiction of how racism is taught. Like even “both sides-ing” racism is too frustrating for her mom. Also proving why a lot of the time intent is irrelevant. When you accidentally knock over someone’s drink, you still apologize even if you didn’t mean to.
@nixasteria

As someone who forgets to think before speaking Carmen is so annoying on how she takes it. You are always responsible for how you make someone feel regardless of intent. It’s not that hard to just genuinely apologize and try to be better. It’s the bare minimum people are asking for really. How you respond to constructive and reasonable criticism speaks louder than any words you are saying.

I think that her ego strength is low and, rather than face and feel her own guilt, her reaction and rationalization is a defense mechanism to avoid that emotion. It's unfortunate because in situations like these, sometimes the person who felt hurt to begin with ends up feeling invalidated in their hurt--so much so that they may even feel compelled to comfort or cater to the person who they felt hurt by.
