I think Beau Is Afraid didn't get the credit it deserved. I'm not sure whether it's because people (justifiably) love Hereditary and Midsummer so much and therefore the expectation was just insurmountably high, but equally I don't think Beau Is Afraid by any means falls short compared to Ari Aster's first two films. It's just wildly different and challenges the conventions of form and structure in an original way.

I loved both Rye Lane and the D&D film, I was luckily in London when there was a showing of the former (this was a couple of months after the general release, so had left cinemas). It’s just so charming, and with so many films last year being well over 2 hours it has a 5* runtime, that also applies to Passages. I also really liked The Other Fellow, which was a right pain in the arse to see, there were only a couple of screenings on weekday lunchtimes where I could get to (and still required a hundred mile round trip to see).

For me Palm Trees and Power Lines is one of the most surprising movies I saw. It was nominated for some indie spirit awards last year, which is how I knew it exists and it's one of the most uncomfortable but also unflinching movies. Really incredible. It's about a girl falling in love with a man twice her age and shit goes downhill from there. And another really uncomfortable one but great especially with a fantastic lead performance is The Teachers' Lounge which is on the oscar shortlist for international feature but I feel like it's not getting the buzz it deserves. It's about workplace politics but also trying to stand your ground within large amounts of pressure and social structures, I thought it was very layered and well done.

I feel like Alice Rohrwacher's La Chimera with Josh O'Connor hasn't received any attention this year. Technically I got to see it only last week but it premiered in May at Cannes and in the rest of Europe in October-December so. I left the cinema uncharacteristically happy with it, the way I haven't felt about films for quite a while now, and felt the distinct urge to know if Karsten liked it - only to go through your reviews since May and not find it! (Have to admit I haven't found anyone at all who reviewed it so far. Criminal.) So i highly reccomend it, very interested in what you'd have to say.

Infinity Pool was really slept on, its impossible to talk about B. Cronenberg films without comparing him to his father, who is obviously a big source of inspiration for him, but that film on a lot of levels picks up the ball of a lot of David Cronenberg's bigger hits and runs with it. The whole fall into depravity and obsession that film covers is excellently portrayed by Skarsgard and I was really sad he didn't get more love for that role.

My picks have favourable reviews, but I think they are under-seen. These movies made festival runs in 2022, but weren't properly released until 2023. Blue Jean I thought was beautifully shot, a gripping drama and one of my favourites of 2023. One of my other favourites was Riceboy Sleeps. It was an emotional coming of age story and had some of the best long takes I'd seen all year. I think you'd like this if you liked Past Lives. Lastly I'd like to shout out I Like Movies. I knew I'd enjoy it since I was a Canadian boy obsessed with movies like the main character. To my surprise it was about toxic masculinity in film communities. I thought this made it more urgent than most indie dramadies with film obsessed characters.

My pick would be 'The Lesson' directed by Alice Troughton. Fantastic performances from Daryl McCormack, Julie Delpy and Richard E. Grant, and a fantastic script by Alex MacKeith. Has a lot in common with 'Saltburn' (namely Richard E.
