I really enjoyed this conversation, and can totally relate to this guy. A musician I've never heard of btw, and now I'm looking forward to checking out both Opeth and Porcupine Tree, thanks to everyone who commented. I went to a Music Industry Arts college in the 90's and it was made clear to me with this statement: "You can do whatever it takes to make it, or be broke and be an artist." I went, "oh, I thought we were here how to learn how to support us as artists" but it was definitely the former, and it made my decision easy. I make music because I have been obsessed with it since I was young, not to be famous or make money or get attention. The idea of pandering in music makes me slightly nauseous and I feel good when I go to sleep at night that I have built my own world around my musical expression. I don't even like to play the same songs at shows! lol. And like Steven, I feel like "I've already done that, why would I repeat myself?" I like the idea of having the freedom to do whatever I want and I claim that freedom and never take it for granted. Thanks for this video and passionate comments, nice to know I still have a musical family out there that resonates with this mindset.

As much as I love blackwater park I don’t think it’s worth the hype it gets. Personally I think the album before that “Still life” is a much better album, Better riffs & melodies, Very diverse and technical with a very somber and melancholic atmosphere which completely encapsulates with the concept of that album which in itself is beautiful. The reason BWP gets all the credit is because it was there breakthrough album, It was on a major label with worldwide distribution and that sent them off to worldwide domination you could say. Wilson’s hand in that album certainly helped and the production is top notch, creative and certainly not your run of the mill metal productions that was happening at the time. Mikeal himself has stated many times what I just said about BWP and even he doesn’t see much of a difference between that album and the one before. Don’t get me wrong I love BWP and everything Mikeal has ever written I just prefer “Still life”

I'm trying to compare what he's saying about the industry, fans etc. with Joe Jackson's career & things *he's said* about the same issues & without knowing the details of either, it's impossible. Joe was for some reason incredibly lucky & no record execs ever gave him any ultimatums. But that doesn't explain things like the popularity of Jumpin' Jive, the album _or_ the tour. It was something no one asked for or wanted, & it's not like he was a sex symbol or good singer. & he'd often yell at his own fans. That could be a part of Wilson's experience though. He could only know how he's irritated his fans by making himself accessible _to_ them. That itself can be a mistake. People idolize & *want* to idolize musicians. Treating them with respect can upset their semi-conscious wishes to elevate you. But I'm pissing in the wind here.

I completely agree with SW's contention that a listener's 'entry point' to a band's recorded catalogue is a sweet spot that the artist can never really surpass (for that listener). That sweet spot will be a different album for many different people. I have found that the initial exposure to that band's 'sound' makes an emotional impact, particularly if I really like it, and wires my brain a particular way which affects my experience with their other albums.

This is a really interesting conversation and I appreciate that in here Steven is willing to be wrong or to have his perspective changed with good arguments. Regarding the Metallica example I believe the opposite, Metallica has been notoriously chasing popular trends since the black album. They tried "pop metal", they tried to "grunge-efy" their sound when grunge was popular and then they tried nu- metal with no solos when Nu-Metal was at peak popularity. Lulu I think its the outlier and it is a James's passion project, which is great, but the rest of them is just Lars chasing popular trends and relevancy. Marketing wise it 100% worked for them, but the fans were not blinded by the obvious chase for trends. Some people liked them, some not. I wouldn't personally praise it, but i enjoy some of the songs they did during this phase. I would rather choose a band that did a 3rd great album that maybe didnt sound different because the choose to remain themselves and not go trend-chasing

I think the path towards sustainability as a musician going forward (and I am speaking only as an observer) is two-fold. First, the Patreon/Bandcamp model Steven mentioned - have a small core of dedicated fans who you engage with on a regular basis and who buy everything you do (or subscribe so that they get it all automatically). Secondly, touring. Touring touring touring. I don't think an AI will ever be able to replicate the feeling of being in a club with a blues player, or in a park listening to folk music, or a dive bar with a punk band. It comes down to what can't be replicated.

Ya "Genius" is obviously subjective. One could say it's when you're able to reach the largest amount of ears, Another would be breaking boundaries in a genre, Doing something unique on one's instrument. I think Steve is incredibly eclectic. So he's able to explore. With my 40 years of listening a lot to all genres of music, I believe that with Porcupine Tree that was one of those moments that eventually they ended up having the perfect lineup of musicians that all added their own genius to create pure magic. To this day I still never get tired of watching the live in Chicago and the live in Tilburg shows. I really enjoyed what John Wesley added to the group. I still will turn down the lights and lay back and turn on the Sky Moves Sideways. I like a lot of Blackfield and what Steven recently did with Ninet. All said and done though Porcupine Tree is what has affected me the most. Of course a large part of that is the fact that I'm a drummer and a huge fan of Gavin's style of playing.

Well, if you're into interviewing musical geniuses, what about Todd Rundgren ? The first song he ever wrote was "Hello, it's me". Became a top 5 hit when he rerecorded it as a solo artist. Then, he's a guy who dreamed 3 of his songs : "Bang the drum all day", one you may be aware of, but also "The Waiting game", with all these Brian Wilson like complex vocal harmonies and then "Lost Horizon", a song he had to remember for 2 months before being able to finally record it since he was doing a worldwide vacation tour when he dreamed it. So he had to play it every day mentally in order to remember it... That, and many many other feats of his, is being a genius. 10:30 : TR happens to be the epitome of this kind of "not caring about their career" type of musicians.

The song Steven was talking about was Shallow from Deadwing. And no i didn't have to go back and watch the prev interview because it was so good that I remember all of it. I can't than you enough for doing this. Steven never played shallow a lot even on the first tour, if at all. EDIT: Ok it looks too guts got it figured out before the end of the interview.

a really excellent and thought-provoking interview. I could never stop thinking about Devin Townsend, who also fitted most of Steven's decriptions of artistic integrety and following ones own passions. They are very much alike in this respect and not coincidentially are among the few artists I by records of without second-guessing.

There is so much awesome passing of knowledge in this interview that I feel that the title doesnt do it justice. And while perhaps interesting to hear about Robs personal thoughts on his career as a writer, somehow it put Steven in the role as the interviewer, which is a shame given what could have been said amongst many other topics. You would never see Howard Stern or other great interviewers take that much time on themselves imho. For that reason only this is a 9/10 interview.

27:40 talking about bands that created their own musical universe: I've always felt this way to Porcupine Tree. When somebody would ask me about what kind of music I like listening to, I was like "I really like Porcupine Tree" (what is a complete understatement, just not to seem too fanatic and nerdy) and they were like "Haha, funny name :D What kind of music do they make?" And I'd be like "Yeeeaahh, well .... they sound like Porcupine Tree." "Hu? I don't get it. Anyways ..." and they'd never experience the joy of discovering that niche but sooo unique music. Even though the Closure/Continuation album has many new twists and sounds in it, I'd aaaalllwaaayys recognize my favourite band behind these songs. You just can't miss their spirit. And yeah, I think that's way cooler than any genre could be. It's like inventing a new colour that nobody knew of before and watching it just shakes your heart ❤ Omg I love them soo much I could keep nerding about them for hours :D 🥲

Oh man, That was an intriguing question. How does a young aspiring artist approach the current state of the industry with AI becoming a part of it and still be able to make a living. The first thing that came to mind is that, In my opinion is that new artists may have to become a lot more diversified and or in a sense say find a niche that does attract a potential fan base or followers that is unique and then diversify into other artistic lanes after you already have built up those who follow you for who you are personally and share with them daily. One example of this that I have witnessed this happening with is the journalist/Political commentary podcaster Tim Poole. He first built up his popularity being a boots on the ground journalist, Then after getting popular at that went to doing multiple sessions daily on current events, Then because of already being a practicing musician, Decided to bring in familiar artists he had met along the way and produce original songs that actually did incredibly well on the charts because of already having a fanbase. Maybe with AI society is going to seriously revisit the old saying of "Keeping it Real" where artists are seriously going to have to wear their hearts on their sleeves again to hopefully point out a difference between real human emotion and Artificial.

I would love to talk with Steven Wilson , there is so much in this interview that I wanted to comment on. as a 60 year old fan that has seen the Music industry change , I watched this interview three times and wrote down all my comments on 16 pages of things I wanted to say and my feelings of fans and How I see "he" has some fans views all wrong , I love his music he would have been incredibly successful if he started his music in 1970 , I don't even think the Beatles could be as successful today as they were back then , the industry would not allow it. When Clear wire bought the radio stations in the U.S. it was the death of good music on the radio, the reason porcupine tree /SW is not popular in the U.S. is no one has ever heard of them , they are getting heard of by people like me , from the bottom up and as time goes on they will become more popular because people want to hear it. I found out about PT and SW through Opeth and that was in 2013 , I have turned many people on to the band /group through the years and still today people get in my car and say wtf are you listening to this shit is amazing. thanks SW you are: Yes, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy , Bowie , Elton john , James Taylor and many more rolled into one, you can play Pills I am taking and Novak and Hallo gallo what a freakin range , oh you don't like that song well how about this one , you are like 700 musicians in one man, literally amazing.Love ya, Andy Burke Battle Ground Washington

Bands with an established fanbase have, at times, been openly hostile during interviews regarding being essentially forced by that fanbase to play their "hits" while on tour, and seeing how the interned having enabled rampant unauthorized digital downloads of intellectual property, go on tour frequently, and playing those popular old songs for their fans, is how musicians make money these days. That attitude is apparent in Wilson's comments about his desire to have the freedom to make any sort of music with sounds and blueprints from any other genre as being, to his mind, liberating and a goal to pursue. But fans choose to follow a band like PT because they love the overall sound and love the way the songs are put together. PT could have remained togeher without such a long hiatus and accepted the challenge of making music with the same band members and same instruments within the same genre. They would just have needed to write great songs. The songs would stand on their own merit. It would be admittedly more difficult to work within those limitations than it would be to imagine a great Young Country song, for example,, and then have to discard it from development due to it being within the wrong genre, and something that would not have much appeal to their established fanbase. The key is to write great songs with extreme and meticulous care. I suppose musicians, like all of us, should be free, instead, to do things like add a choir or an orchestra to their next album and call that "creative" and a "new sound". One person's creativity will be another person's copout due to the advent of laziness. We all are, at heart, prone to taking the easy way where one is available. Overall, a great interview of a man who deserves to be far more well-known and admired by the music-listening public.

Fantastic interview, thank you. The conversation about AI generated music was very interesting. For me, there will always be the human connection, or the insight into another mind and attempt to communicate something 'real', that will always be missing from AI generated music (or books, etc.). So to me it is more of a novelty, and could never be profound in any way. Although for the majority of people, simple novelty might always prove sufficient, if they only listen to surface-level music already.

My understanding and, at east, use of the term "genius" is reserved for those who have discovered for themselves. Something anything, which instructs the to see the relationships not readily apparent is reveled by its employment. And, of course, for others to become aware of their "genius" is also compelled to follow through with sharing the awareness through providing a creative product utilizing it. At that point of creative expression explanations serve more to limit understand than to elucidate it.

Love the discussion on how do you continue to please the fans while also not remain stagnant and or stay creative and explore boundaries. With the current news of Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater and all of the discussion around that fact and also listening to a lot of Rick Beato and his breakdowns of Bands and what made them great. Has had ne contemplating the same questions. Thinking back at the bands that I admire and have followed throughout the decades or watched fade into the past. I think in my opinion what makes a great band that will have longevity is to obviously have a great lineup of talent and put out great songs, but I think you have to be able to either be able to bring what the band is going through on a personal level out through the music that the fans can relate to or do so by what the culture is going through at that time. Then be able to do so as time goes on and keep up with cultural evolution while also evolving as a band whether it be getting better on one's instrument, trying new approaches in style, maybe incorporating more or maybe less to the overall sound. It reminds me of watching Queensryche's "Building Empires" video when it came out after their success after their Empire tour. They made the point during the interview that the challenge ahead was going to be to still grow and evolve. To not become to comfortable in the success and remain complacent. If one was to listed to Operation Mindcrime, To Empire, then Promise Land, all three are very different but in my opinion great in their own way.

I began with Deadwing then went back and back and back, then forward with Steven' music. Some collaborations I have liked, some not. To me the music Steven has made is described by me to other friends and acquaintances as "if Pink Floyd started a band today" this is what the music would be. It's easier to say that. One friend listened to a few songs here and there at my home and then years later he is listening to it all the time. Acoustic Music Resource founder said to me on the phone once, "people don't know what they like, they like what they know". I buy music from Bandcamp and my wife blows me off on it but later she comes back and asks, "what's that? It's a good song"!

there is something really funny about an economic guru that makes slitghtly right wing content interviewing the guy who recorded "the future bites". also i think he general rob is more in love with the idea of steven as an anti-main stream artist more than steven's music itself, wich makes the whole interview feel strange, like he is going in a different direction than steven is, trying to make him say things that would realize rob's anti-main stream fantasy. it's a nice interview in any case simply for the fact that is rare to see steven talk this long in such a relaxed way. Though to be fair, I like KC's 80s incarnation, but all of it is a subjective experience anyway. I'll probably continue calling SW a genius though....
