Underrated I absolutely agree, you can get some nice tones when you place it well up the fretboard and its also easier when changing keys. You can get them with built in tuners even, now that's handy.

i know there are "purists", who refuse to ever use a capo, i don't see why though. many years ago a guitar teacher told me, that the guitar is historically supposed to be used for open chords. the playing and the techniques have evolved insanely of course and it's definitely not the same since it was first created, but it never lost its original purpose, which was accompaniment, playing chords. he told me that the tuning of the B string logically doesn't make any sense, because it's tuned a major third apart from the adjacent strings, unlike all of the other ones which are tuned a fourth apart from one another. but he said the reason for that was to facilitate playing open chords, which ring nicer and is the original purpose of the instrument. i don't see a capo being a shortcut to guitarists, i see it as a useful invention extending the original use of the instrument. other than that, no one seems to have a problem with tuning all six strings half a step down, which is the exact same thing as using a capo only in the other direction tonally. also the world not having a single iconic world class guitar riff in Eb minor (played on a guitar in standard EADGBE tuning) is enough proof that a capo (or tuning down) is actually a must.

I tune the guitar a hole step down for songs that go high on the voice (Extreme's Hole Hearted for example or Snuff from Slipknot/Corey Taylor). And then use the capo for Songs that would be too low to sing in that tuning.

I never understood the stigma surrounding using a Capo. I mean for beginners you can learn just a few chords and literally be able to play hundreds if not thousands of different songs which is very encouraging and makes them not want to give up so early. For more seasoned players it's a very useful tool. Glen Campbell, who is arguably one of the best players to have lived, said it was like a secret weapon, especially in the studio. I think you did a great job of explaining how to use it and also explaining how to practice the Dreaded scales... Ugh.. Necessary evil because it really does teach you how to coordinate your fingers individually and independently from one another. You explained and demonstrated it in such an easy to follow way. And like you said it will open your mind up to explore your own style and create something unique. The ability to teach is a gift and looks like you have that gift along with your other talents. Thanks again for another inspiring video.

G-7 is a good Capo. Not on the cheap side of things for sure. I own one and baught one for my little brother for Christmas. I will say though, if you are older and or have arthritis in your hands it can be a little difficult to use at times because you have to squeeze it tightly together. For that reason the one I like better is, I think the d-adario? It's the one that has the adjustable spring tension. I know you have to squeeze that one as well but it's a different hand motion altogether. Hope that helps anyone decide.

Thank you John! I appreciate the kind feedback! and well said in regards to capo use! For practicing scales, I always make sure I play a few exercises that involve them whenever I'm noodling around on the Guitar in random moments. Try and make it as 'non-chore-like' as possible! 😀 🙌

Another very cool video, ARP. I don’t use a capo very often, but I make there’s one in every guitar case and even one in my harmonica case. I generally use Schubb capos although I bet my lovely friend Tommy Loose would be happy to see me use a G7 since he promotes them as well as being the most amazing guitar player and teacher. I’m going to have to try out some of the embellishments in your lesson. I seem to throw suspended chords into most of my songs. A sus4 chord can be a nice alternative to a 7 and sounds richer to my ear. Keep on keeping on! I used to play with heavier gauge strings and I tuned them down a tone to save the tension on the neck. Another friend used to ask to borrow that guitar at events we played because he said it had a fifth gear ;-)

Hey, quick question for you! How do you handle people who are drunk or under the influence while busking? You know, the ones who either want to sing, ask for songs you don’t know, try to play your guitar, or just hover around. Any tips?
@AugustRadioProject

This is a great question and one I've been thinking about since I read the comment. Here's what I've come up with: The best way I've found to handle drunk people is to treat them like a child who is misbehaving. Don't yell or get angry, and don't feed any negativity. Be friendly and recognise that the culprit is just trying to get attention, but be firm, maintain boundaries. In many cases I've had drunk folks who come over and want to get on the microphone. The first thing I usually do is try and distract them in conversation... say something like "What are you doing? Are you going to sing a song?", to which they usually say yes so then ask them what song they plan on singing. When they answer, ask them if thats a band/artist they like, or a genre they like. After a moment, they tend to forget why they came over in the first place. Or you tell them they can't sing that particular song because it's far to difficult or make a totally non-threatening joke. As said, most drunk folks just want the attention, they want to be acknowledged. If you give them a little acknowledgement then that can often satisfy them and they'll eventually wonder off. The loitering around can definitely deter other folks from watching, coming over or even leaving a donations. Again though, I've always found that eventually they get bored and wonder somewhere else after a while! I was busking in Cambridge once and a drunk dude wondered over, barged me out the way and stood at the mic. Before he started yelling, I said "wait, what song do you wanna sing?". He looked kinda perplexed because I hadn't got mad and was actually kinda being friendly. He paused for a moment and went, "err Anarchy in the UK"... For whatever reason, that made me laugh. He started laughing too. Then I said, you can't sing that, that's not a busking song... and he genuinely just went, "oh, okay" and then walked off... I hope this helps somewhat. Friendly but firm! 😀🙌

Love your video's mate!! I use the capo a lot but what I don't get is why you tune your guitar a half step down just to get it up again with a capo, doesn't that just create more fret-buzz? Or am I missing something here? Great tutorial btw.👍
@goczangabor24

i guess he plays most songs without a capo and the open chords with Eb tuning suit his voice better. when playing guitar and singing that's usually the reason for tuning half a step down. although when the accompaniment is just a guitar by itself it also has a somewhat fuller bassier sound when tuned down, but it doesn't make that much of a difference that it should prevail over the singing convenience thing, so i'd still place my bet on the first one.
@kite666G

@@goczangabor24 That was my first thought to, but when seeing him playing most songs with a capo I was starting to wonder.

Exactly what this says! Half-Step down suits my voice better for all the songs I play in open with no capo (about 40% of the current set) 😀 to prevent fret buzz you can use slightly higher gauge strings in lower tunings - I think anyway! 🙌
